This is the way of weathering ...

The Land Rover comes very shiny out of the box. Masking the windows on both sides. Spray clear matt acrylic lacquer on the body. Rubbertires need to be cleaned with whitesprite more of this later.

The matt finish is done with light grey and silver Tamya acrylic paint washed with water on a q-tip. Leave some spots on the edges of the carbodywork. Originally this parts are made of aluminum and don’t rust like steelparts - they oxidazes and the paint peels of.
Paint small stripes of grey and silver to highlighten some parts on the body.

Steelparts as hinges, bolts and underframe were painted with enamels in rusty colors. And added some powder paints in rusty tones. To create rusty shades on the body, I washed with whitesprite down from hinges and bolts.

The rimes were painted white-grey and made rusty in the same way as on the body.
To make mud on the thires, I made a mix of plaster and mudcolors. The sides of the tires were brushpainted with powder colors the look like old dried mud.

The roof is airbrush-painted with a light grey-brown acrylic paint. Wash with whitesprite on rusty colors where the roof lay on the underlying steelframe.

This model will not be put outside on the garden railway when not running the trains. But to protect the weathering from moisture and rain, it will be given a protecting warnish - clear matt.

I hope this explanation will give some of you ideas to do something of the same kind.

A new coach coming from the workbench.

Though it's still winter, I think summer will appear this year too - but I'm not sure.
This time the Pine Hill Railway gets a Vale of Rheidol Matchboard Summer Bogie Coach from I P Engineering.
As you may have noted, the coach is shorter than the origin. Due to sharp curves on my railway, I like to convert the kit a little bit.
The internal number is Co15 (C is 3.class, o is bogie, and 15 is the number).

Here is the first photo of it - indoor - because a summer coach would look funny outside with 12 inches of snow around.

Great coach - nice detailing - not sure what wood it is, mdf it isn't!

The I P kit is lasercut plywood. Very nice and accurate fit. The teak-/mahogany-look is a wood-stain lacquer in 3 layers.
Norwegian coaches where often made with teak-panels on a pine framework. So this is definitely a Norwegian coach.

As you may see - it’s modified from 7 comp to 5 comp due to sharp curves on my garden railway. The rest 2 comp will be used in a coming project.

Here are some new pics from the Pine Hill Railway (PHRy). There are some new buildings: A goods-shed, a beam engine pumping house, and a small chapel.

(It has not yet made any smoke - maybe it needs more power than the 12volt that the manual says.)

Great to hear from you again Kjell. Some interesting developments on your railway. Really like that goods shed - is the bike something you have made or something you have bought?

Lovely pictures Knell, I love the copper steeple on the chapel and the busy body style vicar. No trouble with kick sledge over here but if we get a winter like last year it may become problem

The bike was bought in a dollhouse-shop in Leeds. Too much fancy small details to make this by myselves ...

Not a Series 1 but the Universal Hobbies TD5 Defender 110 Police Battenberg is not too expensive (compared to the rest of them) - I've found one on Google from a toy farm specialist for £39. It is nominally 1:18 BUT it is advertised as 240mm LoA and the LR Dimensions are 4600mm over the bumpers so 1:19.2. I'll measure mine when it arrives and post dimensions on here. Mine won't be staying looking like a Police car for long!!

My Universal Hobbies Landrover started life as a Red Cross marked vehicle with full length soft-top. not quite what I wanted. It was also left hand drive, again, not suited to my needs, so.....

The frame and rimes needs som rusty enamel colors mixed with powder colors.
The tires and sides of the car will look better with some mud. Try to apply mud acrylic colors mixed with plaster.

Then the pig would feel much more comfy ...

I don't want to hijack the thread - but can't find anywhere else to post this:

My Universal Hobbies TD5:110 arrived today and I've taken some measurements and compared against the real thing. Firstly the LR official length of 4660mm is wrong - unless the "Puma" 110 is shorter than the TD5 (which I doubt). My Puma measures 4370 from the outside of the cowl to the rear panel. The Universal Hobbies 110 is 239mm over the same measurement - which is 1:18.28. The floor to outer flat rooftop (behind the driver's "B" post - where the panel seam is on the roof) on my 1:1 scale is exactly 2000mm. The UM 110 is 109mm over the same distance, which is 1:18.34.

Most important, the truck looks right when sat against 32mm track. Yes, it is out of scale, but not by much and, after all, it is a Landie - they aren't exactly precision built themselves. The model is much better built than the 1:1!!

I would be happy with it, looking forward to seeing what you can do to it now.

It will stay as it is for a while as I have some rolling stock to get on with! It's actually a pretty good model - I've seen a lot worse. It will probably end up black and a Utility back. A Puma bonnet would be nice - but it is quite a lot of work as the TD5 depression is difficult to work with. Still, I can just pretend it's a replacement as they end up nicked in any case!!
Not used to bashing in this scale, most of my Defenders are from Hart Smith kits - sadly no longer available. Yours and KjellAn's are setting pretty high standard!
