Dunno if this is an option for you, but I've had to put green garden net on a frame around some parts of my layout to keep the local evil moggies ( not even ours!) and wildlife off the vulnerable bits. Two things a) they don't like loose net because it tangles their claws and b) they only jump ONTO things, not OVER them like a dog will. I've run a length of garden string along the back and draped the net loosely over it and hanging down at the front, just hooked onto drawing pins in the fascia to stop it blowing up in the wind.

If you have spent hours tiding your ballast mate, shows you still want to run trains, no matter how small your track maybe. Some members don’t have a track to run anything and they have to go to a steam up or even a club were they can run them. Personally I don’t like clubs, been involved with them and boy what a snotty lot they can be.

The net idea might be a way forward to keep the moggie at bay. Thicky, our indoor cat, has a complete aversion to getting tangled in anything and this has proved handy when there is a need to keep her off things. Net curtain material works for us.

Mind you, our last cat was called Lolly - a name we inherited from the previous owner - abbreviated from Lollypop.

We had a pair of sister, Boudiccia and Cleopatra. They ended up being known as Fatty and Thicky for very obvious reasons. Sadly Fatty expired a few months ago.
We also have a stray that has adopted us who goes by the name of T.O. this stands for 'The Other' cat. Naming animals is not one of our strong points.

I am sorry to hear of your loss, I was gutted when Molly my last cat passed away. I like to think she is still around though in spirit as one of the new boy cats we have reminds me of her (he purrs and meows all day long just like she did).

Although the netting sounds good I am concerned my cats will have problems ensnaring themselves while jumping (despite them wrecking my railway I do love them!).

My wife suggested a while back about covering the areas they use with temporary planks when the railway is not in use but at the time I didn't like the idea of covering the railway up but i may need to investigate again.

Andrew's Slomo should arrive today so I can get this fitted to his Russell.

I made a start on preparing the space for the device, frame spacers removed and smaller replacement spacers installed to retain rigidity of frame:

Tom, Another thought for you. To keep cats off some parts of our garden my wife uses Jeyes Fluid because they don't like the smell ( nor do I!). Just put a little bit in an old foil food container in the area you don't want them to go. It only stops them over a fairly small radius but they do move off and ruin a different area instead.

Rather embarrassingly, I don't think it was anything like that clean when I sent it to Tom!!!

I've been on the SSP website before to see if they do a slo mo to fit a roundhouse Russell but they don't seem to offer one. What model are you using and are you having to make any modifications,Tom?

I am using the Lady Anne version and no mods will be required although I don't believe anyone has fitted one yet so Andrew's loco could be the first!

Terry (SSP Slomo) is always trying to improve his products. The latest Slomo comes supplied with an axle with a notch machined in place so the sprocket only requires one grub screw for a nice square fit on the axle.


Also, the Slomo housing now secures the axle bearings in place where as with the ones I purchased they were glued in with araldite (don't quote me, I am only assuming).


So after using a fair amount of this on Andrew's Russell (the wheels were not interested in sliding off the axles!):


We ended up with a Roundhouse Russell fitted with a SSP Slomo, woo!


Test run next...

I wouldn’t worry about being embarrassed Andrew, I sure most of us don’t think to spend that much time on cleaning our locos to get them that clean.
