The Warren Point and Stow Railway

Post by Sir Clothem Cap » Sat Mar 26, 2011 6:17 pm

Hi All I thought it time I started a thread on my Line.

It all started with a trip to the watercress line when I was a teenager I had already collected and run a whole host of mamod wheeled vehicles and a wilesco but then I saw a new mamod steam train set. Steam on rails what a novel thought so shelling out my hard earned money I spent the whole of six weeks wages on the set.

A slow gathering of extra track and points (no railway is a real railway until it has points), Another engine followed later on the Sl2 in blue and a car boot find of a whole railway (2 sl1s some rolling stock and more track) soon boosted the railway apart from one thing. The railway wasn't permanent and was laid out on grass run and put away again. unlike my OO railway in the loft which is built on base boards .

All was changed a few years ago when I found a book called a railway in your garden. It seemed to feature a lot of LGB which I think is too toy like and madly expensive (you may disagree but its my opinion) anyway it inspired me to go for a layout permanently in the garden. O gauge flexitrack was purchased then I found out that sm32 track was deeper and allows some of my stock to run without hitting every sleeper!

Track laying commenced in earnest and soon I had a single track that was slowly extended into a strange shaped loop as it fits a triangular shaped garden. As I have felt the need passing loops have appeared as well as the start of buildings to allow the railway to be more than some track round the garden.

Now you are up to date with the railway so far I will add photos and extra bits as it develops.

This is the steaming shed built to protect mamods from the wind while steaming up

Warren point station based on stone coloured floor tiles so it can be removed quickly next time I have to replace the fence post

Plans for the new stow station have been approved and a building contract signed.

(loosely translated I went to a car boot sale and got a sylvanian family house that appears station like once I finish painting the roof a proper colour and not bright blue it will be installed. Photos to follow. :D )

Some changes to the track plan have started with the hope of eventually having an interlinked double track. The draw back is the passing loops end up as part of the mainlines so multi-train storage is a problem.

How many Mamods do you own? :D

Love the photos by the way - the derelict quarry and the older Mamod match each other perfectly. Nice to see the 'new' Mamod out and about too - what does it run like? :D

I own 6 now one mk2 one SL2 and four SL1's most have been repainted or are in a livery that is a revised one from the colour I got them in.

The new mamod has a unique meths burner that has a large tank and two wicks. It runs at a nice steady pace but the meths lasts longer than the water so must be watched. The regulator is very controllable for a mamod and I built the quarry section especially for it to pose in.

Its been a while since I posted anything as life gets in the way of a hobby but some changes have been made to the WPSR. The main one is relaying the track on a cement bed this year in an attempt to stop weeds and grass covering the tracks. Rolling stock hasn't changed much but I finally made the ip rapier work.

It did but does need some work now. Garden railways seem to deteriorate between running days. :D

Too right but it is manageable. I use a battery loco to test the track no mamod gets steamed up until the battery one has made it round 3 times without derailing.

i tend to just have a visual check then take a steady run round to clear its throat then load up on a train. Have you any upgrades on yours?
