Re: Ringbalin Light Railway
Did a little bit of scenery on the upper loop from where it starts its climb to the end of the bridge.
I glued a fibre cement backing, using liquid nails landscape to the edge of the steel roadbed, then covered it with acrylic house render coloured with a "sandstone" oxide.
Once it is completely dry I will look at applying a black acrylic paint wash to highlight the texture

Re: Ringbalin Light Railway
This is an idea I am toying with to add a sort of backdrop to the line.
It is artificial turf and as there is only about 200-300mm between the line and the edge I want something to catch a train if it derails so it doesn't drop the 900mm to the ground.
Thoughts??

Interesting, considering using this myself to form a grass bank.

It looks good in that shot, but may not look so good if curves are needed?

Re: Ringbalin Light Railway
As luck would have it I ended up with a piece of treated fence paling that curved in the heat we have had the past few days 33-34C.
So I took the opportunity to experiment with a support for the back drop around the curve, I intend to put a wire mesh frame work between the timber and the track and lay the turf over that. Any lumps and bumps can be cut out or just left to add to the impression of a hillside.
Steel uprights will be cut off level with the top of the timber.

All great ideas - good lateral thinking using the fake grass.

I have used the odd piece of artificial grass, in that odd place where I haven't planted, but want some green to control. In the UK you do need to manage it though, as seedlings will sprout through it.

Re: Ringbalin Light Railway
Jimmy,
When I laid mine I used what is known as cracker dust which is a crushed rock, it contains fines as well as small pieces of rock. I mixed some cement powder in with it compacted it with a vibrating plate then lightly sprayed it with water, then laid the turf.
No problems with weed at all.

Re: Ringbalin Light Railway
The render cutting and artificial turf bank has been completed.
I filled in a curve with fibre cement sheeting and applied concrete house render coloured with an oxide over it.
I put down a wire netting frame for the turf to sit on.
The turf was laid over the top of the timber and stapled to it the bottom is just held in by the weight of the turf, I did not glue it down so that water can drain through.
I did a clearance trail with my widest loco (a Bachmann "Connie") and wagon and the loco only just brushes the turf in the narrowest place so I am happy the clearance will not be a problem. If it does become an issue I will trim the turf with scissors.

Re: Ringbalin Light Railway
The upper loop is now complete and operational, compliance tests were carried out with a train completing 4 circuits with no issues.
As a result a certificate of compliance has been issued.
Blog has been updated and a "scenery" page will be produced in the fullness of time.
Pictures of the testing.

That new corner looks very smart indeed, well done!
I really like hearing about your line - it's a very different approach to most lines on here, so plenty to learn from! Nice to see it slowly developing over time too...
All the best,
Andrew.

Re: Ringbalin Light Railway
From the outset I decided to future proof the layout by having it elevated. With 2 artificial hips the prospect of crawling around on the ground as I get older was just not something I looked forward to.
I started as a HO modeler (still have a small one in the shed) so I just moved my scenery ideas outside and upscaled them. Not having access to a local hobby shop I have had to improvise and use what ever comes to hand, that means that a lot of my material comes from either the hardware store or the local Op-Shops and garage (car boot) sales.
A lot of abstract thinking is involved.

Re: Ringbalin Light Railway
I decided to build a HO layout in my shed so I can still do something with trains when it is;
a. to hot to work on the Large Scale layout (usually over Summer) or
b. it is to dark, i.e night time, to work on the Large Scale railway.
It represents the Eastern end of the Kepnock Valley, the Western end is a Large Scale (G) railway Ringbalin Light Railway G Division: About the Railway (ringbalin-light-railway.blogspot.com) which geographically occupies a part of my backyard; both layouts live in a portion of my imagination.
The railway is built on a shelf in part of my shed, it is L shaped and measures 3 Metres (10Feet) x 3 Metres (10Feet) the shelf height being 1.3 Metres from the floor.
The reason for the height is twofold;
a. I feel that HO layouts just look better and appear less toy like when viewed at close to eye height and,
b. It is planned to use the space underneath as a storage track area for my Large Scale (G) railway with a spur line coming in from the back yard.
Blog of G layout; https://ringbalin-light-railway.blogspo ... -page.html
The power and control will be provided by an NCE "PowerCab" DCC controller, the decoders I am considering are "LAIS" recommended by some UK modelers they have basic direction and lighting functions.
I have started a blog to record construction, lots of pictures and a couple of how I did its that may inspire someone with an indoor layout;

Re: Ringbalin Light Railway
Column Mountain construction continues.
The foam shell has been coated with Acrylic House Render coloured with an oxide, this is the same as what I used on the G Division to make a couple of banks.

Looks like you're making good progress indoors and out. Interesting to see you can use the same approach for both.

Re: Ringbalin Light Railway
My next project is to turn this LGB 0-60- on the right Into something that resembles the Australian sugar cane diesel on the left.
This loco was always destined to be converted ever since it was bought.
It is not intended to be an exact copy but a representation of a sugar cane diesel.
There is a bit of scratch-building involved to change it from a US outline to something more Australian
Pictures, as always, will be posted as progress continues, plus the blog will eventually be updated as well.

Looks like progress is coming along well on both layouts. I struggle to keep going with just one. I've not touched my indoor layout for years....
