With an unseasonably cool day here I started work on the second raised portion of the layout.

Last fall I had built up it's base with rubble from the house project in a teardrop shape for a return loop and had begun heaping dirt on top. Because I have altered the track plan slightly that configuration was no longer a viable option. So I dismantled the entire thing by first removing the dirt and rubble and starting anew.

Tons of work but it's good exercise and helps my 55 year old ass stay in shape. :)

Pulled together the rubble that will be the core for the second portion return loop. Tossed on some dirt. Need to prep more bricks to construct the final shape.

Some progress on the layout as a few hours were spent working on the second portion of the railway with the setting of the first course of bricks for the complete outline.

Looks like you've laid several hundred bricks there, Dwayne. I think this is going to be your best layout yet!

Hi Dwayne,

That's very neat construction. If I may say so - your best yet.

Now comes the bit I've been looking forward to - your track laying is always a treat to see.

Today being a holiday I picked up some lumber to rip on the table saw. Hot & humid as Hades here... but fifteen minutes later it was completed though I was bathed in sweat and sawdust.

These will be used to construct the new switches as most of the old units ended up having their ties lost when I pulled them up from the previous layout. I hadn't treated those previous ties so the lifespan was good for only a few years.

Once the turnouts are built they'll be immersed in the treatment solution that I now use for ties which is a cocktail of used motor oil and diesel fuel.

Watching progress Dwayne but can't help but notice your recent picture of June 11th includes only one dog, do we need to assume the Two Dogs Mining Co. is due for a rename? I hope I'm wrong!
It seemed, from earlier pictures, that the grey dog appeared older, and possibly partially sighted.

@Rik... thanks. I'll be needing four left hand and three right hand switches. Should be getting a start tomorrow on these new switches.

@Peter... the older, grey pup is Maggie. She is alive and well. She's about twelve and mostly deaf now. Her eye sight is a bit diminished but she can still spot the squirrels that call the yard home. Age of course has slowly seen her being a bit stiff after napping. But all in all, she's in good shape. ☺

The girls do me good now that I'm a bachelor. Having said that, when they are both gone there won't be any more pups in my life. My future plans when I hopefully retire in six years are to spend summers traveling around Alaska and Canada (where most of my family still lives). I'd also like to travel further abroad on this spinning rock from time to time... Europe, Asia, S. America, Russia.

Alrighty then... spent some time fussing with the first of three right-hand switches. Temporary test fitting in the photo.

Previous switches were of blade design. In keeping with the mining theme of the new layout these will be of 'stub' design.

Hi Dwayne,

Nice work again. I like the stub point idea. It's a good start. You're making better progress than my current turnout build - it's been on the bench for well over a month now! I'm looking forward to seeing your track start to grow on the new railway.

All the best,

Andrew

Thanks Andrew. I've knocked out three over the past three evenings. The goal is to do one each evening.
