My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
The railways first piece of motive stock has also progressed, it would have been motoring along on it own power however when I did the fit of the rctrains receiver, the running gear was slightly out of time and bound up, I decided in the best traditions of British engineering the solution would only be reached with a cup of tea, however on my return the receiver was smoking and red hot. I had left the power on with it all bound up and cooked the receiver. It wouldn't have been an issue but deltang stocks have been none existent since to seek a replacement.
The eagle eyed will spot the upside down louvre at the front, I didn't notice until I had painted it. I thought I would rather live with the upside down panel then the mess I would have made trying to fix it Things very nearly complete. I have filled the front gear box and driver console with lead shot, it a rather heavy little loco for its size, I hope when I get it to run it will have some pulling power with the extra traction I hope it gives.
and the very start of some weathering, its a rough reconditioned / reengineered loco. but it will still be a dirty and abused daily worker, not a museum piece. Still some way to get it how I want

Looks great! I imagine all that extra weight low down will definitely help with traction & stable running.
Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
Agree, very nice loco.

The next project, but as you guessed not finished (there is definitely a reoccurring theme developing) was the replacement guards van, this time I went in passenger livery not freight grey, I thought until some form of more advanced train breaking was brought in on the railway a guard operated break at each end would allow just the loco to run around and not have to try and shunt the railways only passenger / guard carriage around each time. I want to tidy up my wiring a bit then roof and accessories can be added
Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
Very smart - and the lighting looks excellent!
All the best,
Andrew.

Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
Next was a bored wet weekend off work (and the first recent project i've actually completed) Its an IP Engineering wagon, and one of the very few private wagons the WLR has. With Express Dairies being up at Appleby I thought they would have been supportive of the railway, bringing milk churns to the mainline to go up to them. This wagon is from slightly later in the railways working life, the internet seems sparse on dates in relation to the opening of the Appleby depot, I would suggest the early 1930's would be my time span here. I thought it bring a bit of diversity to the stock.

My kind of wagon, it looks used!

Nice weathering job, nice wagon.

I remember Express Dairies. I used to have a milk round job with a milkman when I was still at school. My Dad also bought a couple of them for us to mess about on in his yard. When they broke down he got the batteries out for the lead and scrapped the bodies.
Nice wagon by the way, the paint job looks brill.

Just catching up with this thread. That Baldwin looks excellent! Sorely tempted to get a PDF kit but I really do have more than enough locos (I keep telling myself)!!
I agree with what's been said already about the wagon. It does look brilliant - as if it's been in service for years!!!

The PDF kits are very impressive, I seem slightly addicted to them, the Baldwin was a little bit of a pain until I learnt of ways to over come the print lines. The plastic is very robust and trying to take It straight on with sanding paper was hard work. However the next PDF project (which as you will all have already guessed is still work in progress) built on this.
So in the railways history this is one of the original loco's, thankfully it came to light that it never made it to the front when the railways went off to war, it was used in training. Run to the ground and abandoned. It has since been located and rebuilt and over hauled. It is a PDF Linda, that's been messed around with. Some suggestion has been made by the railways staff that it was made just after Charles and was the evolutionary process that led to Linda and Blanch. But Hunslet records don't seam so agree.
I've now found and automotive repair filler from Halfords that is acrylic based and easy to sand to cover the fiddly bits and went for sticking thin plasticard over the bigger body bits.
Because its a rebuild / overhaul i've been able to take some liberties over riveting details, creating something not accurate but pleasing on the eye (i hope)
One if the rivets fouled the fit, sadly the repaint then removed some of the green. But it should be a simple fix
I didn't want to run with a tender so a coal bunker was added to the rear.

That's a great looking loco and you are making a very nice job of it.
More pictures please as you progress the build.

Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
There was also the post Christmas overtime payment that was spent on a second hand kit built roundhouse Katie. I knew part of the reason I wanted a garden railway was for the sound and feel of steam power. I didn't plan on buying a steam loco this soon, but my over time came into the same value, so I justified it on the basis of fate.
It runs smoothly on the blocks, visually she not in bad shape, but there was no way it was ever going to be left alone, there will be a overhaul in its future. But for one I am not rushing into it, I will put some thought into it and finish up some over projects first.Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
And no we are finally up to date. I hope semi regular updates as bits get done.
So following on from all the advice on building with foamex, I have very nearly completed the Jackson's miniatures signal box.
A few little bits to finish up for phase 1, porch ridge tiles, chimney top, handrail and guttering. But that's in hand. I am pondering an interior, its painted out and was given a wooden look floor, but I think I will wait until the line gets built, I plan to light the buildings, so will wait and see how things look.
I now love foamex board so a box of binnie parts were ordered, so scratch building of so rolling stock has commenced (I know I need to finish one project before I start the next really)
I thought the Pway team would appreciate some hopper wagons to drop ballast, they will also be great for coal deliveries and gravel from the quarries as full freight services are resumed.

Nice spend on a nice loco. Like the look of your signal box, it's looking fantastic.

Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
Well another weekend lost to foamex, lost but not wasted. completed one hopper wagon and added a pair of stake wagons as well to the WLR inventory. even remembered to take a few pics as I went along.
I'm rather happy with the outcome, just a bit of weathering to make them look used, and to finish the 2nd hopper wagon off.
