My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
Next up, a weeks skiing. How does that involve trains you ask. Well that because it was Switzerland and the Jungfrau area. Home to the Wengernalpbahn and Berner Oberland-Bahn, narrow gauge cog mountain railways (for some reason I cant help but think the WLR may make it as far as Ambleside now, with a mountain railway up Kirkstone for tourist and quarry traffic) I loved the snow pics from a few weeks ago, this is how the swiss deal with it. The snow blower was an amazing piece of kit, once it clear directly infant of the train the blower split down the middle and moved left and right extending the cleared area on the run back.

Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
And finally the WLR itself, the Balwin loco has been mothballed slightly due to the delay in motive control arriving from RCtrians (I've seen posts of kits coming out now so it looks like supply lines have been re-established, fingers crossed I can get things moving soon) After everyone's comments on passenger rolling stock livery design, I have committed to painting. There seems to be a sri lankan influence on the colour choice. As we get into spring I hope to get bit more done.

Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
Coach works have continued on the WLR. I cannot remember who and post and whos suggestion it was to use aero modelers canopy glue but it fixed the overlay very neatly. I've taken a few pics test fitting the interior, along with some half painted passengers.

I'm pleased you you had success with the canopy glue, I used it on my 'Lineside Hut' kits and found it so good I mentioned it on my thread, that is probably where you saw it? I can add that the laminations are still firmly stuck together, so it works!
The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?

I totally approve of your colour scheme, my own passenger stock is Wedgewood over Ivory.
I don't know what they thought in Halfords when I spent 20 minutes dithering in the paint isle, and then only came away with 3 rattle cans!

VERY nice! You've achieved a great finish. And the choice of colour scheme surely betrays a Skarloey Railway influence?!
All the best,
Andrew.

I agree with Peter, Rik, BorisSpencer and Andrew. Great build and the colour scheme is wonderful. Nice bright colours.

By the way, those holidays look like you had a great time, although the India one would of been my preferred one. Don't like snow, .. ..Far too cold for me....

Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
Apologies all for being useless at chronicling my garden railway adventures, cant believe it been a year since I last posted. Lots of planning has gone into the outdoor element but no ground works yet, still had to keep the boss happy with DIY projects, so the bathroom was completed and two redecorated bedrooms. But there has been more then a few motive and stock projects started and half completed. So I will start with some updates to them.
my guards coach has been completed (and prep work started on its two friends)
Some light electronic work conducted
Then the completed people added
I'm rather happy with my complete carriage, just need to decide if i'm now going to give the roof a canvass look covering and get the decals sorted for 1st class and guards compartment and maybe design a logo for my railway, I think the space on the cupulas would be finished nicely with one

Very nice Howie, well done.
Looking forward to seeing them running one day.

Lighting looks good, as indeed does the whole coach.

Like the light in the coach and the people look just right. Love the colour scheme too.

Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
Thank you all for the kind words. I really enjoyed getting back into modeling. The way the coach turned out spurred me onto more.
The next project was inspired by the trip to the snow. A swift16 plow was bought. The guards wagon I had built ended up with a chassis warp and just to finish things I knocked it off the table damaging it. So it became the perfect donor.
It clearly needs a dust off and having looked at the picture i've still got some bits to fettle and the plow element is begging to get weathered in.

Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
The railways first piece of motive stock has also progressed, it would have been motoring along on it own power however when I did the fit of the rctrains receiver, the running gear was slightly out of time and bound up, I decided in the best traditions of British engineering the solution would only be reached with a cup of tea, however on my return the receiver was smoking and red hot. I had left the power on with it all bound up and cooked the receiver. It wouldn't have been an issue but deltang stocks have been none existent since to seek a replacement.
The eagle eyed will spot the upside down louvre at the front, I didn't notice until I had painted it. I thought I would rather live with the upside down panel then the mess I would have made trying to fix it Things very nearly complete. I have filled the front gear box and driver console with lead shot, it a rather heavy little loco for its size, I hope when I get it to run it will have some pulling power with the extra traction I hope it gives.
and the very start of some weathering, its a rough reconditioned / reengineered loco. but it will still be a dirty and abused daily worker, not a museum piece. Still some way to get it how I want

Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
Looks great! I imagine all that extra weight low down will definitely help with traction & stable running.
Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
Agree, very nice loco.

Re: My first railway - The Westmorland Light Railway
The next project, but as you guessed not finished (there is definitely a reoccurring theme developing) was the replacement guards van, this time I went in passenger livery not freight grey, I thought until some form of more advanced train breaking was brought in on the railway a guard operated break at each end would allow just the loco to run around and not have to try and shunt the railways only passenger / guard carriage around each time. I want to tidy up my wiring a bit then roof and accessories can be added

Very smart - and the lighting looks excellent!
