The start of my garden railway

Finished my Phil Sharples kit today. Quite a nice little thing to put together, although I changed some bits - 3d printed an exhaust and some doors on the bonnet and added some IP Engineering metal wheels to weigh it down a bit. Let my daughter pick the colour hence the purple!



I'll probably add some handles on the cab at some point as that area is a little devoid of detail, but for today it is done!

The louvred doors certainly add to its character and realism. Looks like you've made a good start.

Managed to get it outside for a test run today and it seemed perfectly happy trundling around with a flatbed wagon behind it. Unfortunately I managed to clip the exhaust with my finger and it pinged off into the grass never to be seen again! Will have to print another one today, most likely with a silencer this time (and a bigger footprint to secure it better)

I once had a very poetic looking guard made from various bits of leftover Star Wars figures - I think he had a kind of waistcoat and great voluminous shirtsleeves which would have been most impractical when coupling up etc. He took a dive from his van during a derailment on a raised section of line and was never seen again. I was fond of him and searched hard, but that was two houses and nearly thirty years ago, so I don't think I'll see him again!

Love the loco, it looks great. I think my daughter Daisy once requested that my Regner loco, named after her, should be painted purple. I planned to do it, but still haven't got round to it. Alas, she's no longer terribly interested, so when I eventually re-paint it I reckon I'll go for Ffestiniog green, with "Earl of Merioneth" style lining...

Hey folks,

Not had a huge amount of time until recently to do anything with the railway so I've done my best to make up for lost time since my last post!

Firstly I had the only functioning loco out with my daughter today for a while, the weather recently has done the plants wonders and they are really starting to spread out a bit more now.



Secondly I have started planning out stage one of the expansion of the railway. It is a short one way section of track that runs from the back of the current line around the front and off to under the tree in the garden. I will be adding a station at each end of this expansion. I've marked out (incredibly professionally....) the new route in red on the below pic. I had planned for the line to go the whole way around the tree but the roots are so numerous and thick it would be more of a challenge than it is worth at this stage! I am planning on raising the whole railway up at some point so at that point i will revisit the idea of getting the whole way around the tree.



Thirdly a new kit arrived from PDF Models today. It is the "No 11 – TRECWN" 99hp Baguley diesel that they released recently. Rather than doing anything useful today I have spent the day building it instead! Still quite a lot left to do but it has completed some test laps of the railway and seems quite happy. Hopefully by the end of the weekend it will be fully painted and detailed.

There is nothing that says garden railway more than a good old fashioned land grab and it will keep the young lady interested.

Just nice to be working on it all again. Did a bit more this afternoon to a flatbed truck I designed and 3d printed, not done the coupling yet but quite happy with how it has turned out so far (paintjob is not finished either!).

Thanks guys, will hopefully have a more finished pic of the truck tomorrow. I would love to extend my land grab even further into the garden for railway duties as there is quite a lot left (see below) but I have been told to stick to my corner!

Land grabs are best done using stealth and cunning.
An expansion can also be as simple as putting in the elevated level, mentioned previously, to complement the existing ground level track which just happens to need just a little more room, "not much honestly dear"
"The clothes line could be moved closer to the house which will be easier on you dear"
