Re: North East Victoria Railway
Hi Mitch no plans for a H, Ive never been a big fan of the cabs on those locos.
The other "big" locos I have chassies/parts for are the; Silverton A, WAGR S, TGR Q, TGR CC, Fyansford #2 and Fyansford #3 (the ASG)
Years ago I made a big list of engines I was interested in that had commonly available wheel sizes and took advantage of having a bit of disposable income and Bachmanns dirt cheap pricing on their big haulers to acquire enough parts for the rest of my modelling career. Its something thats definitely been worthwhile for figuring out headshunts and minimum radius etc but once I use the stuff I have in stock that'll be it. Cant rush these things but its been quite therapeutic to start ticking locos off the list.

A good approach to building a large fleet, for sure. They're certainly coming up well.

Re: North East Victoria Railway
Thanks Aaron. Love your line, Buildings and infrastructure is something I've been putting off far too long but you've absolutely nailed the Queensland tramway look.
Being faced with a long weekend and some upcoming steamups I decided I'd put the foot down and start pushing some stuff out the door. Late this afternoon NEVR's DE5 made its first steps across the yard. Also running today was the Barclay on the weed train after the DH failed (forgot to charge the batteries!) the lines now serviceable again
The DE and the DH still very early days for paint and detailing but for a quick and dirty its ok. it'll be getting a coat of Caterpillar undercoat as a final colour and it will receive the BHP Whyalla blue stripe Shunting the weed train after its return. It has no problems with moving a large rake and i havent even put any lead in it yet! Some of the Rollingstock got some very rough lettering. Im still waiting on the local decal man to get back to me about transfers so i may get vinyl ones cut instead. This wagon lives outside and it shows. Its in line for a roof repaint in the very near future and a replacement door for the other side. VR BV class car coming along (and what will now be D1 in the background) The Barclay preparing to climb around the horseshoe after crossing over the walkway
Another update coming soon

Re: North East Victoria Railway
The Melbourne suburban area is slowly starting to come back to life, including rail operations. The ESET diesel electric ventured out for the first time in a while to the North East Victoria Railway.
The hiss of the porter's blower is drowned out by the whine of dynamic brakes as the ESET diesel electric slows down for a cross. Part of the goods is a new hydro electric turbine, destined for the mountains.
For the tramway crew used to electric operation this is a different world, with big heavy trains and more power than we ever normally handle. Here is the first test run of the DH and DE in multiple unit. Despite their slightly different running gear they ran fine together.
That is not all though, the first running prototype of another locomotive has recently emerged from the NEVR's workshops.
It is of course an EMD G8, a locomotive that changed the nature of many rail operations forever.
Running in multiple unit these two locomotives have a very impressive amount of power, even the longest train that could be assembled was easily managed on the 1:30 grade.
The two locos shunt the train for the return trip.
Back on the wharf at Hastings the little Malcom Moore diesel mechanical is assembling the next train of outwards traffic.
The ESET DE couples to its assembled train for the return trip.
Heading home the driver swings the throttle to notch 8 for the grade ahead.
Thanks for having me Jake!

Just superb photos of your locos and rolling stock Jake. Great to see them doing hard work and for one it looked very easy on that gradient...

Re: North East Victoria Railway
Cheers Jake, I've been pleasantly surprised with it myself. Similar boat here, regarding buildings - Got a couple half-finished, but I really should be building up a big stock of them now, ready for when I'm able to build the "permanent" tramway in 18 months or so. Looking forward to seeing what you do about buildings, when the time comes.Tropic Blunder wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 9:55 am Thanks Aaron. Love the idea of a weed train. Better than traipsing around the yard filling up an old washing powder bucket. Will have to do as you are, on the next tramway, when I can just have a weed train on standby in a shed storage siding.
Also particularly like the shot of the lonely wagon in the siding as the heavy goods rumbles past.

Re: North East Victoria Railway
Ive got a fair sized stock now of buildings from Tod but I havent really got anywhere to put them which is annoying maybe under the freshly planted banksia a little town will emerge. The main focus of late has been on building passenger cars which hopefully ill be able to post photos of in the next week or two. The bachmann cars are nice but they just arent distinctive enough for me to suspend my reality
Thanks Rik, Alexander did an incredible job building that loco, being an LGB White pass its running is imaculate and the detail hes added is complete down to a roll of toilet paper and graffiti in the compartment behind the cab!
As for weed collection it'd be best to have to build a set of containers like Alexander has done, hes got the right idea with bulk loading size

Hi Rik sorry thats not mine! Thats Alexander (User Melbournesparks) hes another G scaler that lives around two streets from me and also models 1/24th scale Australian prototype, what are the odds!
There are a few early videos of the railway here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0VV24u ... riaRailway but none of them show the latest two yards or terraforming thats happened in the last few months. Ill try and make a new video to show it in the next week or two.

Re: North East Victoria Railway
I realised its been quite a long time since I updated youtube so I cut together a couple of short clips of rollingstock from the weekend.
Every engine thats RC controlled was running (though not all in the video) which is a first for the railway. This did bring about some other problems as a lot of my older models use the supposed 3000mah NIMH available from but I've found that to be an extremely optimistic valuation. New batteries are in the post especially for the battery pack that I swap between engines as its cells have now gone into the DH. A big batch of LED's also arrived as I got sick of shunting in the dark with no headlights so the next few weeks will be spent retrofitting those and also working on a few of the works in progress that you can see in the video.

(also please forgive me for not putting the buildings out)

I'd forgotten how steep and varying that yard is. Nice job on building a workable line through it - I'd have just given up!

I really enjoyed that, thank you! I particularly liked the scene approaching the new yard at about 4 mins.
A really nice variety of locos and stock - and was that lovely 12-wheeled clerestory-roofed carriage your new one? Looks great.
Cheers,
Andrew.

Re: North East Victoria Railway
yeah its quite the slope I really didn't want to have to build it the way it is but much like a real railway the land dictated the alignment. The exit to the yard is on the to do list of things to fix its gotten taller near the top and sunk at the switch so the DH's pilot gets snagged on the frog, a very frustrating reminder of how bad my tracklaying is.
Thanks Andrew, Where the small yellow diesel is a where two track saw tooth engine shed will be sited and an island platform will separate the two lines. Im still figuring out how to make a 8m long sheet of 1:24 bricks so it takes on the appearance of a VR station similar to Jolimont but we'll see how it turns out. The carriage is new as well but it seems none of the VR modellers on here have spotted it yet

Re: North East Victoria Railway
Here are some more photos from Tuesday including some recent and older projects
VR BV carriage. an unusual car for sure this one is a bit of a trial on how successful longer 3d printed cars are. while I'm happy with it the second one I'm building will certainly be a lot straighter (it seems I even modelled the usual wooden car sag)
Fyansford #4 pulling into the platform with a mixed rake of ancient timber cars. #4 was roughly put together months ago but I managed to fry the receiver on its first day of running I finally sourced a replacement deltang unit and I'm extremely pleased with how it runs. Ive made a new roof for it and now i can proceed with cab detailing plumbing etc
The entirety of my fleet (the amount of engines in the house is double this but they arent really NEVR engines as theyre owned by the Minister for land)
One of the DE's leads a short train of four wheelers up the grade. This train was actually on its way to help disassemble the wye at the mine. the track layout has been fairly simplified greatly reducing derailments and freeing up the extra rail for the new storage area under the house
The DE shunting four wheel wagons ready for shunting under the house
Transfer to the goods yard. I wont take photos of under the house because honestly its extremely dirty but the track now extends all the way around the water tank into a yard throat and into a 3 track yard for storing frequently used rollingstock between sessions
The wharf shed got its length extension and has now had doors added. the dock will be concreted to railhead height hence the floating door to the left. Cladding with crimped Aluminium BBQ trays is next on the list
The first two tracks have been completed and now store stock the last line will have an R1 curve and thus limit stock that can be shunted into it but thats part of the fun!

Re: North East Victoria Railway
Hi all its been a long time between updates and so a lot has changed not all of which will be covered in this update. The biggest change is due to the impending arrival of Mr Inspectre (yes hes still coming. hes been slowed slightly due to covid and a few detours to other local lines) the NEVR has gained platforms, Seats, Station signs and station buildings! The other change has been that a few of my locos have bowed out of service to be finished or have been scrapped. #4 had a particularly nasty accident and was practically destroyed so I have build a new body for it recycling a few bits out of the old one. The photos are in chronological order so you may note changes
The MM works a ballast train. Now that the platform has been poured I filled the baseboards with a thin layer of recycled drainage ballast that contains a lot of fine. 4 varieties of moss have been transplanted as well, time will tell if they survive. Pouring of the Dock and workshops is scheduled for the next few weeks but we'll see how the weather plays out E1 and the Climax work the port in the early hours of the morning The Climax prepares to shunt its ore train into the dock for unloading while #4 propels a pass into the platform ready for the morning newspaper train #4 with the QG's and ZF. All of these vehicles are preserved in real life at the Bellarine railway although this consist will never be a thing unfortunately for many reasons.
The first platform I poured was at Port Melbourne. The sun was well and truly down after 5 in the afternoon when I got home from work so pouring platforms was done with concrete mixed in a bucket in the dark with nothing more then a tomato stake and a torch for assistance. Plastic backed MDF was used for the form.
The finished scene at Myrtleford. Platform gardens, benches and signs are all still needed but the garden now looks very different to when I started

Ah, I was wondering how the Inspector was doing; Good things usually take time. New ballast looks great, and the platform will only get better with age. Those Beyer Peacocks do have a fine look about them.
