Braved the elements to install the 'Rainbow Tunnel' and how the line will look once the track is in place.

This is a better refinement of the picture from the previous post. oh and incidentally, the other colour I used was also beige, so both the lighter and dark versions as well as africa brown.

They are so good they deserve a prominent position, I hope they can be seen from the deck area.

Presumably in reality the moths are actually 16mm bats in the tunnel??

Some more progress on the tunnel. Managed to get some planting done. I'll always say the last bit of planting before the winter but I'm a bit of a plant addict.

Painted heathers are a bit notorious amongst the gardening fraternity and I can sort of understand why. I love looking at garden railways that run though carefully sculpted landscapes which plants that match and i may eventually modify it to suit that's aesthetic but for the moment I'm just having some fun, the heathers will grow out of their dyes and maybe in the next year or two we'll see something refrained, however for the moment I'm just having fun with the pansies, violas and heathers and everything else.

Theres a little bit of residual work to do before I crack back however.

Some repairs and the bridge will be next and that will lead the way to the permanent way.

Call me stupid, but how where those tunnels mouths made. :withstupid:

I actually love the way you have weathered them and the placement in the hillside look just right. Waiting for you bridge now. :!: Will that also be for next year :?:

You're most definately not, I think it was foamex or HIP, one or the other. It was stuff I found at the back of my workplace and took (after asking).

I had made plans on A3 graph paper of the bits I needed to cut out and went about reproducing the plans to the board including the masonry. Then it was a Stanley knife carefully cutting out the bits. And finally gluing them together.

The face is 5mm thick with 5mm sides and the abutments and details are 3mm thick. I went through the painting before but I'll readdress it in better detail with the bridge. That might be coming along within the year but there is alot on atm and not all us good so I'm modelling and gardening when I get the chance.

I'm other news I've been making a start of the Witches Hovels for the back garden coven.

Atm there is only two and a bunch of dug up roots to act as withered trees. In all honesty it looks better in real life.

Back on the foamex this chap inspired me, he can show you what you can do with the stuff. He tends to do a running diagram of his process. He's very good

Thanks for the link, I haven't come across him before but he's very good, as you say.
I particularly like his Water Tower video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_j9I4DhIeKk ). His basic techniques are what most of us do, but there are several wrinkles that I've not come across before. Using a curved Stanley blade appears to work well and his ability to cut straight lines without a straight edge is very impressive.

It's been too long. A lot has happened since my last post, lock down...a new (much better paid) job, my mum took seriously ill and we're working our way through it.

Will everything I mind, I made a big push to getting the line sorted out. The bridge is now complete. I've aptly named it, 'Lock Down bridge'. and is based on one near where I live.

Image

The track plan has changed too, from a dog leg with a siding to one with a run round loop and a steaming bay.

Image

For the point I made up some rotating switches from bits of brass and some spare wood I collected from used up fireworks. Again not perfect but they do the job. Not sure how long they'll last under a curious toddler's stamping feet though...

Image

I ballasted the track with potting grit which will do me for the moment. For the steaming bay I had some spare sharp sand and some coal cinders I kept for such an occasion and once dampened it seems to be sticking together quite well. I'm also thinking about adding some to the station area, mainly to show where the trains should stop.

Image

Image

Image

I'm having some problems with the older LGB R1 point which are causing the loco to ride the rail and come off. I may have a hack to solves it involving the check rails, but we'll see.

Image

however, Vyv seems to be happy in her new home, once she's settled in with buildings and other bits she should feel just at home.

Best wish's to your mum and hoping she is doing well.

Thank you chaps. It's been a difficult few months but we're working through it.

As for modelling matters the bridge itself was completely scratch built using scrounged PVC foamex (or something similar). The photos below show the main building processes. The rivets were just some resin jewels with gel adhesive backs I found in the local poundland - I added them with wood glue for security.

I have to admit there was some schoolboy errors with it but eventually I may address them when it comes to enhancing the line again.
