The Bayfields Light Railway
More work done today...
After a delivery of rockery stone, we have set about landscaping. Building up to the Filcris, soil has then been used to infil the gaps, ready for planting.
The last section of Filcris went in for the quarry sidings. The breeze blocks at the back are a base for the second station.
I have not decided on planting yet, but I spread some temporary trees about just to get a feel for what it might look like. I'm looking forward to hiding the filcris with balast.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for sharing this latest update. I am greatly encouraged by seeing your efforts. It's very useful reference for my planned construction of a Filcris support to the track. In my case I plan to omit the 'decking' and instead lay a strip of geotextile over the top of the runners and fix the track down on top of that.
I was wondering what intervals you have spaced the support posts at and whether you used spacer blocks between the runners in between the posts?
All I need now is some drier weather!
Andrew

I have spaced each post 50cm apart, with a spacer inbetween. Filcris can sag , so you need to make sure its well supported. The trackboards on top do add stability to the entire construction, and it is solid.
I would be tempted to use more spacers or posts closer together if you are not using trackboards on top.
I will have to see how my trackbed behaves over the next year to really know the ideal method for filcris. So far im very impressed.

Thanks very much Rob, that's useful info.
If I can get myself in gear and crack on with some construction I'll post the details on my Charnwood Light Railway topic to let everyone know how my construction technique works out.
All the best,
Andrew

More progress...
Managed to get a quick run last week. 'Wendy' on a goods train.
Hudson-Hunslet in the quarry.
'Wendy' and 'David' on shed at Bayfields. The water tower is almost completed- it just needs a hose added.
To keep the ballast in place, I decided to use uPVC 'cloaking profile' to edge the Filcris trackboards. This material is usually used for windows and fascias. Its black on one side, so blends in well.
With the uPVC in place, i could brush in the ballast. There are gaps between the track boards, and the ballast fell through, so I covered these using duck tape. Roundhouse Little John tests the track.
The quarry area was done by mixing sharp sand with ballast. The ballast I used is 3mm joining aggregate. I think this looks ok in the quarry area for now.
Finescale Quarry Hunslet takes a train through the rockery.

Swift sixteen do a body kit that can be made to fit and Edrig chassis. It is not just the cab though.
If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer!

Just seen your article in this months Garden Rail. I must say I am very impressed with the write up you have done. How have I missed your thread though on the building of the line. It's a brilliant line and I have learnt a lot from your build. I love the way you have the line meandering along the beds. I love every bit of it.
Well done on the article. I may get to do a write up myself one day.
