Progress from the past couple of days. Ive removed the piant from the cab roof, chimney and cleading and plugged the hole in the cylinder. The paint also come so I painted the dome as a test. Today I spent about an hour chipping away at what i think is decorators caulking on the side tank, turns out it wasnt just on the outside. Those with a nervous disposition look way now.

Do you want some big number '1's for the side tanks?

Seriously though, after the rebuild i think your going to instantly see improvment in running

Thanks for the interior shot of the tank Dan - you've reminded me that I have to fix the in-laws toilet cistern 8)

Its progressing very slowly. The frames have been stripped and repainted but the lack of a milling machine is seriously delaying the new axle boxes so it may go on hold untill something arrives.

Nearly a year since the last post I have an update. After ALOT of work the chassis is now running on air once more. The quality of machining was far worse than I thought. To get to this stage new axleboxes, axles, eccentrics and valve rods have been made along with many other parts needing major fettling to get it somewhere close to right. There is still some work to be done to the port faces but it is running.

Possibly one of the longest rebuilds on the forum now however the end is in sight. This photo was taken this morning just before taking it apart to paint.

To get to this point:

All the rods and valve gear have been reworked
New axles and axleboxes
New cross head and piston rods
Altered the valve rods
Resurfaced valve faces
New valve covers and steam T
All new pipework
New water tanks (apart from the outer pannel)
New boiler fittings and water pump
Moved lubricator

I don't think there is any part of the engine that hasnt been changed in some way. Providing nothing else goes wrong it should be in steam for summer.

Having just read the entire thread I have to take my hat off to you Dan. That is one serious rebuild. I was particularly amused/astonished by the white gunge in the water tank. I have seen some interesting bodges in my time and that is a good one.
I look forwards to seeing pics of the engine when finished.

Bit more progress, the buffer beams have been painted along with the cylinders. All the other parts that fit to the chassis have been given a coat of primer. Unlike the prototype I am going for the full passenger livery which is a lined blue with purple valences and cylinder covers.

Progress is slow but still continuing. The boiler and smokebox are bolted and sealed together, ready to go back in the frames. The cylinder covers have been fitted and the buffers are painted ready for lining. No pictures today but might have some pictures of new paint tomorow.

As promised, the first parts of blue are coming out of the paint shop. The cab roof is also painted in black, won't be long till the first fire :D
