Having just read the entire thread I have to take my hat off to you Dan. That is one serious rebuild. I was particularly amused/astonished by the white gunge in the water tank. I have seen some interesting bodges in my time and that is a good one.
I look forwards to seeing pics of the engine when finished.

Bit more progress, the buffer beams have been painted along with the cylinders. All the other parts that fit to the chassis have been given a coat of primer. Unlike the prototype I am going for the full passenger livery which is a lined blue with purple valences and cylinder covers.

Progress is slow but still continuing. The boiler and smokebox are bolted and sealed together, ready to go back in the frames. The cylinder covers have been fitted and the buffers are painted ready for lining. No pictures today but might have some pictures of new paint tomorow.

Bit more progress to report, the steps and boiler bands have been lined and varnished and lining has begun on the first tank.
The new insulation has also been added to the boiler.

Yet more progress has been made but first, I realised that this thread started with a pile of bits and there was no picture of the loco as it stood. I went in search of one and found this taken shortly after I bought the loco.
Back to present day, Both tanks have had the white lining applied and are just awaiting the black inner. I've finally found a set of crests so the transfers will be applied shortly.
There was also a major step in reuniting the boiler with the frames after refitting the cleading and boiler bands. Since this photo was taken all the boiler fittings have been replaced.

Thanks Jim. I'm using a lining pen. Its relatively simple to use but takes a very long time, the outer line on one side of the cab took me 2 hours this morning.

It is the Bob Moore pen, I've got a book that uses bow pens more or less throughout however a friend said he had much better results with the Bob Moore pen. Today marked the end of the painting with the last coats of varnish applied to the body work.

After a very long day of nuts, bolts and trapped fingers the rebuild is finally complete ! I didn't take any pictures during the assembly, it was pretty straight forward apart from getting the tanks in which took a little inginuity.

The star was the last thing to go on, its a familiar sight on most Caledonian locos but is often left off the models. Yesterday was the steam test which im pleased to say it passed with flying colours. Only a short video as I'm rather out of practice so was struggling for a steam.
WARNING: in the video below there is a gas burner with a terrible howl, don't have your sound up loud.

With the rebuild completeits now time to do some fine tuning and finishing touches. The test run at the club track was a good start but there was still something not right. Further examination back on the bench showed that the lubricator hadn't been putting oil in, no wonder it was barking so loud ! This was traced to a piece of grit in the check valve allowing steam back into the lubricator. The hot shower when starting was also a problem so I've fitted automatic drain cocks.
These are mostly based on Dave Watkins' fitted to his Chaloner but altered to be at 90 degrees instead of in line. Since the track visit ive run the loco on blocks for about 5 hours, should have really done this before taking it as its got rid of alot of the initial stiffenss. The next track test is in about 4 weeks where hopefully I will get round without stopping

One last update. During the last run there were some draughting issues confirmed, the loco wouldnt maintain pressure while running. In an attempt to solve this, the chimney has been sleved and a lempor style blast nozzle fitted. Another very succesful test was done at the club this evening, the loco completing several non stop laps with everything working as it should.

Re: Dan's Rob roy rebuild
Does your Rob Roy have any kind of drain cocks fitted at the moment?
