Christmas book suggestions

Post by ge_rik » Mon Nov 09, 2020 2:12 pm

It's that time of year again - and what a funny old year it's been (and still is)!

My missus has asked me for a list of stuff I might like for Christmas which she can use and/or pass on to close relatives. I usually enjoy receiving a railway related book for Christmas so I can browse through it on Boxing Day and thereafter, but this year I'm a bit stumped as to what to suggest. Has anyone come across anything which might be relevant? My great passion is anything related to UK or Irish narrow gauge but I am willing to be tempted by something a bit more exotic.

Any suggestions?

When you last visited me I showed you my copy of 'Railways of the Raj' which your found interesting. I don't know whether you managed to get one, but they are available on-line.....

Thanks, Peter
I'd forgotten all about it. It's now on the list 😊

I've fancied this L&B book for a while - largely judging it by its (lovely) cover, I must admit, but I'm a librarian, so I'm allowed: https://blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/produ ... gL6k_D_BwE

Favourable reviews on Amazon, I like the idea of the large format pictures, and the Blackwells price seems good...

Andrew.

A little niche maybe, but I really enjoyed The Metropolitan-Vickers Type 2 Co-Bo Diesel-Electric Locomotives:

That looks great. I've added it to my Birthday list as my Christmas list is now getting a bit full...

As you say, a bit niche. Not sure I would want to spend that much on a book about a diesel loco .... 😳

Is that the co-bo that Hornby Dublo used to model? I always fancied one of those, mainly because it was a bit unusual.

Ah, in that case the contents of my bookshelves may not be of interest to you: I've got loads of them! Having finished the Co-Bo book I'm now reading Class 47: 50 Years of Locomotive History, which is superb, and a few days ago The Class 33s: A Sixty Year History arrived so that is waiting too.

I do like Class 33s - growing up in Bexleyheath they were the only locos I ever saw going through our local station, and only then VERY rarely... I'm very pleased to see them on preserved lines... Apologies, nostalgia-driven drift thread...
