Great Model Railway Challenge - Ch5 tonight

Post by ge_rik » Fri Oct 05, 2018 12:23 pm

Does anyone know anything about this?
http://www.channel5.com/show/the-great- ... challenge/

It looks like it will be another reality show trivialisation - no doubt they will home in on anyone who appears slightly nerdy to take the proverbial..... Or am I just getting cynical in my old age?

Rik
PS - Sorry if this has already been mentioned - but I haven't found a topic about it yet

If you are cynical then so am I! Next weeks episode is "Judges tune in to model layouts inspired by beloved TV shows."
Most their so called beloved shows I don't waste my electricity on.

It's got a female modeller in the photo (get it) so might not be full of blokes who are too white and nerdy.

I think I will have a look see...

Followed by Rob Bell's Walking Britain's Lost Railways. That's my Friday schedule sorted.

Just noticed the description "Reality contest as railway modellers compete to create miniature masterpieces against the clock."
So, apart from exhibition modellers, pretty much the antithesis of how anyone on here approaches their modelling :roll:

Expectation level reduced to minimum!

It's all in the title.... 'a challenge', which means competition and controversy between members of each team and personal preferences by the 'judges' who will no doubt criticise every detail. Reality TV at its lowest level disguised as entertainment.

Perhaps my personal level of grumpyness has reached biblical proportions, I managed the first fifteen minutes before scuttling off to the study to carry on with a book.

Utter cow dung….. :twisted:

Just like all the small gauge shows I used to go to, everybody criticising everyone else for doing this and that wrong…..

So glad I am now in a far better and friendlier scale….

Long Live 16mm………….

Why don’t the program makers do a reality show on 16mm, then we could show them how it’s done properly………..

Well. It wasn't quite as toe curling or excruciating as I was expecting. However, I do question the current editorial values of programme makers which makes the assumption that audiences' attention spans are restricted to 10 seconds and we are unable to absorb and process information at levels of complexity above that of the average gerbil.

Do you remember that series of tv programmes presented by Bob Symes which explored various aspects of modelling with intelligence and sensitivity? Surely there is still a demand for decent, well made and intellectually challenging programmes these days? You'd have thought with the plethora of channels we now have available there would be space for something more rigorous!!

10 minutes into it on catch up, the presenters are irritating me already.

Anyone notice the 16mm scale Hambleden Valley Railway at the start of the program (1:02)?

I am sorry I didn’t Tom, will go back onto catch up and look again.

That tall guy, Tim Shaw I think is his name does irritate a lot. He was even worse on that car show make over program, a bit like pimp my ride, but it does at least restore the cars. But that guy is the most irritating for me.

Great British Bake Off for model trains.

The recipe
  • Appoint a panel of judges, only one of whom knows something about the topic;
    make sure there are some 'characters' in the teams;
    give the teams challenges which include a high probability of failure;
    edit the footage to include at least one tantrum, at least one bleeped swear word and at least one team member having an emotional outburst - preferably filmed in close-up;
    and then make sure the final judgement is controversial
.

There was a bit of controversy Rik wasn’t there, with those guys who thought they were going to win even before the judging started. We didn’t like them very much, Missiden, I think they are called, you know the ones who can’t count, 10 pre-built items instead of 6.

The captain was almost crying with annoyance of coming last………… :lol: :lol: :lol:
