NWNGR Slate wagons?

Post by paullad1984 » Sat Oct 11, 2014 7:31 pm

Dont yet have a copy of boyd's book which covers the NWNGR, but was just wondering what pattern (if any) of slate wagons did they use, was the design completely unique or was it simular to anything on the FR?

According to Boyd, they look a bit "squarer" I would say then the FfR ones, maybe with a bit bigger capacity. Certainly, they were visually different. There may be photos around the internet, and thinking about it I'm sure I've seen photos in books as well as the drawing in Boyd.
"What the hell is that?"
"It's a model icebreaker sir."
"It's a bit big isn't it?"
"It's a full scale model sir....."

Hello!

Have a look at this: http://www.festipedia.org.uk/wiki/Slate_Wagons_(NWNG)

Type 1 could be recreated using Binnie kits - the rest would need to be scratchbuilt, apart from ones "borrowed" from the FfR in the WHR period...

There are drawings of the later metal framed type in the 7mm association book and Bernard Rockets one, both with their origins in Boyd's work I think...

Cheers,

Andrew.

Yes, very much so.

A word of caution, for NWNG waggonery the Festipedia article will give you a good grounding in the Rhosydd wagon.

What makes the wooden wagons look as if they are from the 'General Undertaking' are the thinner slats than most (the NWNG was financially shagged from the outset) the coupling in a recess on the end and the brake support with the twin row of holes.

Binnie wagons could be modded quite easily.
