If nothing else, paint the wheels and axle boxes. Please.

Don't paint it, just darken the wood with something (suitable stain) to make it look like old wood. The mold marks only add to the character.

That's a lovely wagon - so I reckon it deserves to look as realistic as possible, which means no bare brass. Personally I'd paint the outside (perhaps rubbing some back to bare wood), then dirty it all up...

Cheers,

Andrew.

How about a watered down wood stain?

I would stain over the mould to give that wonderful dirty look. Paint all the bare brass and paint wheels and axle boxes.
If it can be made full scale it can be made 16mm

If there is any stray glue from gluing on the hinges the stain won't take over those spots.

I'd go with a couple of coats of watered down grey paint so it looks as though it once saw a paint shop, some rust streaks on the hinges and body metalwork, then some rusty-black mix on the running gear. Grotty - like an old 'M' wagon!

Just my tuppen'orth,
