livery inspiration

Post by georgesheppard » Thu Dec 24, 2020 10:56 am

Having received several carriage kits in the post recently I've started thinking about possible liveries.

The three carriages I've built previously carry a GWR inspired livery - http://www.gardenrails.org/forum/viewto ... e71c4344ff.

I'm wondering if I should paint the new stock in the same scheme or branch out and maybe go for something a little more colourful? Where do you look for inspiration? I've got three carriages from the line side hut to build, I quite like the colours shown as example builds on their website - https://www.thelinesidehut.co.uk/freelance-coaches.html.

How do you pick your liveries? Any examples that might suit some freelance passenger carriages you could share would be greatly appreciated!

I personally pick my livery by whatever paint I have to hand at the time, yes really. I know most people base it on a real life item, as I would if I was good enough to paint them anything like in the first place, lol

The ones in the pictures look great if that's anything to go by, the blue I particularly like.
The buck stops here .......

I agree! A blue/white or blue/cream livery is currently the front runner.

Maybe a British Rail blue?

I am totally with you on this Steve..... freelance coaches = free colour choice! Whatever I have available is used to best advantage, the only problem with that is matching when a new addition to the set is acquired.
My railway is a preservation line so stock could be from any region or period......

Plenty of options there!

Of the blues I'd go for 5010 or 5017 personally, but color choice is a very personal thing and computer screens distort colour comparisons anyway.

At the end of the day, the oldage, "Your railway, your rules" applies.

I'm with Philip all the way here. I agree with his 'blues preference' but the choice really is yours. I would suggest having a bit of an experiment with some computer graphics packages if you are more IT literate than me! Alternatively DIY stores often have a wide range of colure samples that can be used for guidance and comparisons of what matches what - and what doesn't!

Also agree if it were me and I had to buy a blue, 5010 or 5017 for me too.

Colours are a matter of personal choice here.
I agree with Phillip, my railway, my rules. Also, has you have got three different kits from different suppliers, aren't they slightly different anyway, which would lead me to paint them in different colours, for me anyway..

Lots of "different" in this post....

I picked up some 5010 'Gentian Blue' spray paint and sprayed some offcuts (thanks Jeremy!). I'm quite happy with the blue & cream, not sure if the overlays should be black. Any thoughts from the forum?

I like the blue & cream with a black line, but personally I think to paint the whole overlay black would be way over the top.

Thanks - you confirmed what i was thinking that an all black overlay would be too much. I went with a much simpler livery in the end and I'm quite happy with the results.

That does look very nice.
What would set it off but test your steady hand would be some gold lining on the edge of the blue.

Agreed Philip, but perhaps too late if the overlays are already stuck to the body sides. I found the best way to achieve this effect is to use gold felt-tip pen and work from the back of the overlay. If any slips occur they will not be where it shows.....

That's a great idea and certainly would have been easier before I glued on the overlays :D. I think it's still possible however, I will do some experiments on some offcuts :thumbright:.

Be very careful George. Like Peter said, it's very hard to do once the overlays have been put on. I did and what I mess I made of it....You however may have a steadier hand.....

I gave it a go on the guard duckets as I hadn't fitted the overlays. Suffice to say, I'm not going to try and gold line the overlays that have already been fitted! The risk of making a mess is higher than the reward. It's a great technique I'd not thought of that I'll use on the rest of the rake however. I can live with the slight difference in livery!

Good for you George. :thumbright: :thumbright:

Peter showed us that sometime ago and I use it all the time now when I build kits. It does so improve the appearance of the kit.

What little lining I do on models now is done with a bow pen. With the hand tremor I've got, I don't attempt to do it freehand and for straight lines use a 6” plastic ruler as a pen guide with a couple of blobs of blu-tack under the ruler to make sure it doesn't slip at a crucial point........

I know bow pens aren't for everyone, but Artline make extra fine tip paint pens (Artline 999XF) in a choice of gold or silver with a 0.8mm tip. There are possibly other manufacturers, but these are the finest ones I've seen here in Oz. They also have a limited range of plain paint colours in the Artline 444XF range with the same 0.8mm tip.

I should think these could be used to give a narrow gold line along the edge of beading, using the same ruler and blu-tack as a guide for the pen. For lining around curved corners in mouldings a piece of plastic with the corner suitably rounded could be substituted as a guide for the pen.
