Traded for these two cars today, what color should I repaint

Post by artfull dodger » Fri Jan 13, 2017 12:23 am

I traded off some of my larger G scale freight cars at the local shop today, and picked up these two LGB personal cars from their toy train series. I think with a respray they would make nice cars to haul my peat bog workers back and forth to work. But what color should I use to tone these things down and be less toy like? Mike

Was leaning more towards GWR brown and cream since I am of the Swindon thinking LOL! But I dont want them to look like modern day excursion cars, more like what might have been seen on peat/slate hauling lines, taking workers to and from the bog/quarry.

I'd agree with Brian either Maroon with grey roof or Red lower half, white upper half with grey roof. Whichever... as they for workers you need stained coffee stirer sticks for slats on the seats....

would you paint everything that is blue into the Maroon? The coffee sticks made me chuckle and yes, one would see those. Good idea! Mike

If you spray everything, inside and out, with a grey plastic primer first then you can see which areas should have a top coat of your chosen colour and which can remain. Probably the interior would be left unfinished for workmen?
The wooden slatted seats will make a huge difference to the overall appearance too.
Remember the wear and tear on the floor where the workers boots have scraped the paint away.
The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?

I think I'd also trim the 'curtains' back and paint them as part of the corner stantions - I doubt that bog workers would be granted that much luxury!

I could trim those to be square corners and sand down the remaining cast in detail with my dremel tool and a cut off wheel. I agree the the curtains are to much for worker cars. I will look at our local home center for some Maroon paint, should I leave the roof white or go with a darker color? Mike

For your coffee stirring sticks, don't go into your local CostaNeroBucks........ find a packet on Ebay. They're not very expensive, you can use the bent ones to stir paint and mix glue, AND you can enjoy your coffee with a clear consience!

I'm not sure I have ever enjoyed coffee with a clear conscience but Brians advice is sound. The last few coffee stirrers that were donated to me by Costa were not at all straight....
