TagTarr Meccano Garratt

Post by Crackingjob » Mon Apr 09, 2012 10:52 pm

Whilst depressed after the Diplock Moty episode, and made with jealousy re the Mini Garratt (wont one!!!) I sat down and mixed real and cheapo meccano to build.......

Image
Mk1 very long.
I had to add weights to the engine sections to stop it tipping into the middle
Image
The motors are covered with a old posh tin, cut in half
Image
I think too much weight

Image
Same drive as Cranked, as the gearing down slowed it to nothing

I tried a run..it worked BUT could only go 15 feet...combination old motors and too much weight
so I stripped it down, removed weight, and shortened the boiler section and it runs better

Image
Mk2

Work to be done...funnel, crew and a roof etc....

Binnie wheels, (badly) drilled out to fit the 5mm shaft. The cheapo meccano type sets, have the same shaft as the real ones, but the metal plates are softer metal. Being the same shaft dia' the proper meccano gears fit! The nuts and bolts in the cheapo sets are metric but still fit through the holes. The holes on the plates however do not line up...can't have it all

Diplock....I didn't win...simples.....and I must remember its FUN its FUN its FUN etc (he says humerously) before I look like this......

But seriously, I was sent these images from the net (I have no idea who built it but looks fantastic) of a climax...worth ago??
