Anecdotally, the erstwhile 'Big Big' range has provided a basis for many a 16mm scratch-building project, using the 0-4-0 chassis which already has quite a narrow gauge look about it. Plenty are still knocking around, although no longer cheaply. Prices on eBay are currently shocking, given that you can get a Phil Sharples chassis kit, with coupling rods, for under £20.

I mention this as I have a chassis, bought around 20 years ago when they were still pretty cheap, in my parts box that will form the basis of a future loco project, and am interested to see what other folk have achieved with these? Here's a particularly nice example:
