That's looking pretty good so far Mitch. What is the chassis made of? I like these Baldwins, looking forward to more of the build.

Hi grant, the chassis is made out of laser cut steel, the project is currently on hold waiting for new axle bushes to come and a few electrical bits too

Looks like it's progressing nicely. As a loco, the Baldwin has always interested me but, until recently, I have dismissed it as I know its chassis would be beyond my limited scratchbuilding abilities. I have been wondering how easy the PDF chassis is to build. I'll be interested in how you get on.

the chassis is pretty easy to put together, just screws and washers mainly.

I'm part way through the PDF Hunslet kit, which will be a very nice model when finished. There are several instructional videos on You-tube showing the build as no instructions are supplied
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBNdapLNfOU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHx5ECfy1vE

As you can see from the video, the kits require a lot of careful fitting and finishing to get the best result, but are great value for money.

Chucking in my ha'penn'th...
PDF double Fairlie, completed December last.

The main kit came via evilbuy, and turned out to have many parts missing.
However, it had been well prepared, with a good coat of smooth primer.
I had to source another motor, and in the process bought a third bogie from that auction site.
This gave me three bogies, all with different motor mountings.

A good deal of bodging and fettling followed, and I'm quite pleased with the outcome.

That does look good and I know how much work has to be put into getting the best from a 3D printed kit.
Looking forward to seeing progress on the Baldwin from Mitch.

Hi Mitch.
Loving to see how you get on with your Baldwin kit. It builds in to a lovely model. I bought mine at Christmas to go with a rake of slate wagons that i am also putting together. I only finished painting it at the weekend and ran it for the first time outside this morning after having run it on blocks for a total of about 5 hours over the past few weeks to 'run in' the wobbly bits. What colour scheme are you considering. I chose a maroon to go with my Roundhouse Russell. Here it is on my cluttered work bench with my unpainted wagons.

Please keep posting. I love to see what others are doing.
David.
P.S. To make mine run properly I had to enlarge the holes slightly in the coupling and connecting rods with a thin round file as they were too tight a fit on the bearings. Also make sure the rods are perfectly straight as a couple of mine had a slight bend towards the ends.

She's a beauty, what a lovely finish! Nice to see them being bought and made into working models.

Hi David , I am painting my Baldwin Wilderness green with black frames + red buffer beams, it will be manually controlled for ease of use and should be done by the end of March hopefully.

The Hunslet kit is now complete and looks pretty good, I think!. It has been interesting to get a smooth finish of the material, but well worth the effort. I am seriously thinking of doing it again, for myself this time. Although there is limited (understatement again!) space in the boiler, I have managed to fit 8 rechargeable AA batteries in there and made a special housing for a 3 position (on, off, charge) switch in the cab, and the RC receiver alongside the firebox.
Dennis and Julie are pleased.....

You've certainly achieved a beautiful finish, and I don't imagine there's much free space left in such a diminutive loco.

The finish you've achieved is remarkable, having seen the starting point. How have you achieved that really effective satin finish?

Thanks guys, always nice to receive such a response.
There has been a lot of preparation time and effort to get a good smooth surface, without that there is no chance of a good finish. Having prepared the surface I first sprayed the individual items with Halford's filler primer, two coats, followed by a fine wet and dry sanding. Next, several fine spray coats of chosen acrylic colour, which leaves a high gloss finish. Final assembly of the loco follows and then a single spray coat of Matt Lacquer, which reduces the full gloss to a nice satin appearance...... simples!

I wish it was.... You make it sound easy but I suspect it takes a lot of effort, practice and experience.
