Upgrading Ivor

We bought one of the Ivor kits available as both our boys love Ivor the Engine. I haven't enjoyed building it but that's just me and card kits really. What I did feel let the kit down was the wheels they provided which were also slightly brittle....

When compared to Ivor.....

So I decided that it was a good time to have a go at some 3d design and get some more prototypical wheels made and use our desktop cnc machine to cut out parts for a suitable chassis....

And the unfinished body perched in place

The boys will be running him on their playmobil track so he's 45mm gauge which works nicely for the coupling height.

Nice job. I think I may have to dig out my old video collection for a trip down memory lane.

Chassis and everything finished, Jones the Steam and Dai Station all painted and varnished. I think the effort of making the wheels and chassis from scratch was definitely worth while...

Certainly looks very workmanlike.

The figure with the glasses reminds me very much of a technician we had in our Technology Dept. He was a really lovely chap - he made ingenious whimsical automata as a hobby.

Superb job, does he:-
1) have a dragon in his smokebox?
2) make the right noise?
3) sing in the local choir?

The chassis and wheels look much better than 'as supplied' you should contact the kit manufacture and offer to sell him some.

I'm glad this is in a thread about Ivor the Engine, otherwise I might be deeply offended by your language ......

If anyone wants to do the same sort of thing I'm happy to share the file for getting the wheels 3D printed! The chassis needed a fair bit of bodging so you might be better designing one from scratch.
