Railbus for the PMR
Re: Railbus for the PMR
I think you're right about only painting the edges. Inset window panes would be a nightmare unless you know someone with a laser cutter. Even then, fixing them in place would be a real challenge (I'd end up with gluey thumb prints on each pane, for sure).

Re: Railbus for the PMR
Easy option Jim, you will finish it that way rather than it being another shelved project

Re: Railbus for the PMR
Jim, if you are using a paint-brush for the lining it will take forever and possibly be a little shaky.... depending on what you have in your mug at the time!
It might be an idea to try an acrylic lining pen with felt tip. I bought mine at The Range (white or gold in stock) but I believe there is a wider choice of colours on-line from other suppliers.
It is possible to run the tip against a rule or follow the raised edge around your windows.

Note to self....build more shelves..tom_tom_go wrote: ↑Sun Oct 21, 2018 10:19 am Easy option Jim, you will finish it that way rather than it being another shelved project
If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer!

I hadn't thought of them. I may investigate further.Peter Butler wrote: ↑Sun Oct 21, 2018 10:54 am Jim, if you are using a paint-brush for the lining it will take forever and possibly be a little shaky.... depending on what you have in your mug at the time!

Re: Railbus for the PMR
The colour scheme looks good, but I agree about lining being dead boring.........
The color choice is pretty limited in the uni Paint markers, black, white, gold, silver, bright red, bright blue, bright green, bright orange, bright yellow and a fetching shade of pink. Tamiya also sell something similar, with much the same colour range.
The non-metallic colours are fairly transparent, so the orange might be worth trying, as it may look more like buff when used over a blue background. Silver would look OK on the window frames, as they are usually unpainted aluminium on modern rail vehicles.
Many years ago there were paint pens available for touching up cars, which came in a very wide colour range. I used them at the time to line and letter a large 7 1/4" loco. Not sure if they are still available though.
I generally use a bow pen and Humbrol enamel for this sort of thing, but bow pens are getting hard to find and the learning curve is very steep if you've never used one.
Regards,
Graeme
Re: Railbus for the PMR
Yes I've always used a bow pen for lining and when Humbrol was 'proper' , a drop of linseed oil to thin it and help flow. These days Humbrol doesn't seem to work so well for lining.

Re: Railbus for the PMR
I do have a bow pen and have used it in the past, but as others have found the quality of humbrol paint is not what it was.
This is quite a simple job as all I am doing is picking out some raised plastic moulding.

Re: Railbus for the PMR
Just to echo Peter's suggestion Jim, I use a brand called Molotow. They do a full range of colours, all acrylic based, and several nib sizes. Originally produced for graffiti artists, I believe.

Re: Railbus for the PMR
I've always found Humbrol straight out of a new tin a bit thin for lining. The tins I'm using at present work OK, but they predate Hornby getting their greasy paws on Humbrol and screwing it up.
In my opinion Humbrol doesn't work so well for anything now. I stopped buying it last year and now use Revell, but haven't tried that for lining yet. It brushes and sprays nicely though.

In the words of Magnus Magnusson "I've started, so I'll finish".
Thanks for all the lining advice, I will bear it in mind for further projects. However as I had started with a brush and a pot of paint I decided to carry on to see how it looks at the end. I can always spray it again if it fails.

That's looking really fantastic, I love the prototype Deltic vibe!

Re: Railbus for the PMR
You have a lot more patience for lining than I have! Good job, Jim! I rather like it.
