Steamcraft Atlas Chassis

Post by Big Jim » Sat May 17, 2014 11:28 pm

A little while ago I acquired a 45mm gauge chassis from a Steamcraft Atlas. It was a bit of a "seems like a good idea at the time" purchase.
I did have a little tinker with it when it arrived but failed to make any progress. The cylinders seemed ok but the valve gear was pretty worn.
I was able to have a quick chat with David Taylor (ex Steamcraft) at Peterbough who did mention that the valve gear did wear quite badly on this model.
I had hoped to just rebuild the rods using the originals as patterns.

I was able to have a good look at it tonight and I think this is impossible as they are so worn and have been 'repaired' in the past.
So a new set is in order.

Does any one have any suggestions as to what valve gear to use and more importantly where to find information on building it.

I want to build a Darjeeling type loco so inclined cylinders would be preferable.

I doubt this will be a quick project.
If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer!
