Peter in AZ
There was a Rowland Emmet cartoon somewhere which showed a driver pushing a chimney brush up a funnel and school books, satchels etc. coming out the top. I was going to "open the front door" of the boiler, but sadly Stewart Browne has constructed it so that the whole of the front comes away for cleaning ... so my cunning plan to stick one of my St. Trinians girls in there head first was foiled. But you get the idea ....

I think that your explanation has a basis in logic that sadly I can´t attain  ;)

If you have a Rowland Emett question, then I'm your man!
I have all of his books way back to 1943 and can show the cartoon you mention from 'Emett's Ministry of Transport', published 1981.

Another version on the same theme is taken from 'The Early Morning Milk Train'. Two identical volumes of the same cartoons were printed in Britain by John Murray in 1976, and in USA by The Stephen Greene Press in 1977....

Very kind. Your collection is far more comprehensive than mine!

New Build Archangel

This discussion prompted me to order a new Skylark as I always regretted selling my 1985 one, Stewarts photo shows it below, as you can see there are many improvements in detail and this one is a meths burner which I personally prefer and is in keeping with the origins of this branch of Narrow Gauge modelling.

My goodness that is a thing of beauty indeed! May I ask how much that has cost you? Is it slip eccentric?

Lovely loco, Stewart really is turning out some nice locos at the moment. Last week, I had the absolute pleasure of operating a 2015 build Sgt Murphey. Unlike many of its predecessors, it had twin cylinders, reversible Marshall valve gear and gas firing, but it was a complete joy to run, and looked understated yet magnificent in satin black.

Yes it was just over 3K which actually I worked out is no more expensive that the one I had in 1985. It is slip eccentric but that is not an issue for me as I wanted It from this Iconic builder.

That is lovely! Stewart does nice work. I certainly like my Princess. I ended up making a front wall for the firebox to keep the breeze at bay, but it is a really exquisite piece of model building.

It runs as smooth as a sowing machine, for a two wick burner on a large boiler it steams up incredibly quickly and keeps pace with the regulator no problem, I particularly like the meths control valve and the cross head feed pump is very controllable, you don't get that feeling of it running away like some of my gas fired locos and no noise.

Attractive model, to my eyes they looked far better this way, than with the extra width to the tanks, and as for the enormous air pump well enough said.

Picked up this on ebay as a non working wreck a 1976 Archangel Princess , just finished restoring it, have made a couple of minor cosmetic changes and boxed in the side tanks and moved them out as per the 1980's version, made new one piece footplate, made one new buffer beam and reinstated the buffers, new smokebox door, new cab rear, new whistle and control valve, new dome support ,moved the dummy cylinders in slightly so the geometry is not so much at an angle, re-positioned the meths tank filler from out of the cab floor and finally new side tank hand rails.
