Archangel Range

Post by HereticUK » Wed Sep 04, 2013 1:04 am

I found the website for what's left of Archangel and they still do limited commissions of their original range. I know that they were very popular way-back-when but has anyone bought one from them recently? Does anyone have any experience with one of these locos?

Link to the website in case anyone's interested: http://www.archangel-works.com/

I was looking at them as a "maybe/perhaps/one day" thing :P

I recently acquired a Marmaduke from 1979 and am absolutely enchanted by its simple charm. Several other friends have a variety of Archangels and to a one they are pleased.

Archangels were and are some of the most highly recommended and sought after. Seeing a 25year old 'Brick' go just as good as a newly-run in RH says it all.

When I built my little 32mm loop I hoped at the time to so eBay get a Brick.

Still do

They'd rarely go to evilBay - they'd be more likely to go to specialist second hand dealers or private sales, as people know about them man.

So, it's safe to say that the website is wholly inaccurate and that they certainly do not do any more builds? That is a shame :(

Just give Stewart a ring.

He's just built a new Cyprus government 2-6-0 tender loco & it's for sale. He has also built Moel Tryfan in cut down form recently.

His number is 01743 860660, he'll be happy to take your order.
He rarely answers emails, so be warned.

Cheers

Well I got in contact with Stewart and to my delight he does take commissions still. However, I think I will be having to save up quite a bit of money before I get my hands on one of those beauties!

Just noticed the website says: Locootives for 16MM, 7/8th and G scale.

Does that mean they are can build commissioned locos to 45MM that would of originally been 32MM only?

Also been drooling over some of the refurbished locos

I assume it does mean that he will build you 45mm gauge locos if you request it. I have my eye on 32mm, however, and eyeing up the Rheidol 2-4-0T tank engine. Also the Sgt Murphy with Marshall valve gear is perfect for what I have in mind! But that's £1600 apparently. If I told you what the Rheidol would cost you would have a heart attack :P

Also he informed me that he had nothing going second hand at this time.

He did a rather nice Sgt Murphy with inside slip eccentric valve gear, very very nice looker!

He still does that model as far as I know! I imagine it would be almost as expensive. It'll be one of those treats I will buy myself once I get some money together and saved up :)

My brick is a cracking engine, very powerful and a great runner. I aquired it very, very cheap many years ago.  (From a well known garden railway supplier who for some reason seems to have no interest at all in sm32)
It could do with a little tlc now as it is getting a little tired so I have booked it in with Rhos Helyg Locoworks for an MOT.
I would love another engine from the Stuart Brown stable but I think the wife would kill me.  :?

See my thread about its re-discovery.

I'm hoping that I will be finding some real gems over the next couple of months. I will be paying a local specialist a visit at some point. Then there's the Model Railway exhibition in Swindon next week, plus the Exeter garden railway exhibition in October which I shall be attending, hopefully!
