Here is a pic of her on the bench, railway is mostly mud and trackwork needs some leveling and joints unkinked for gauge one running. Mine will be getting SDJR transfers from Barrets in the UK, so its in the deep blue color now. I am planning to get a complete new smoke box assembly as this one is all soldered and I want the front cover removable for sealing things, missing the petticoat so she is not drafting as well as needed and lacks the smokebox door casting. A friend has the shop tools, so since I have the book, I may make the attempt with his help to remake the cylinder block/crosshead tube assembly to a higher standard than she has now. I will see how she runs when spring weather arrives. My boiler bands are just black zip ties right now, need to make up proper brass ones but this works for now. Missing the ladders on the engine and tender still as well, gotta make those as well.

I appreciate the positive words, just trying to not get carried away until I know it at least runs on air, if it doesn’t work then it doesn’t matter how pretty it looks!

After much messing around with clamps I finally worked up the courage to drill and tap the cylinder to bolt into the frame, the trunk guide required some filing to clear the con rod but that seems to be normal on these. Just the eccentric strap to go and should be ready for a test on air!

Found some time to finish off the eccentric strap and do a first test on air. Think I need to play with the timing a little bit dead chuffed it even runs!

Ended up with a bit of surprise free time, so got the burner and lubricator and their associated brackets done. With the burner I deviated from the plans slightly and made a threaded brass insert which was silver soldered into the copper pipe rather than threading the copper pipe directly as that seemed like a recipe for future problems.

I’ve started working on the axle pump and have gone about the body in a slightly different way so thought I’d post it in case it was of use to someone. The book calls for 2 pieces of 1/4” round soldered together at right angles
I don’t have access to any milling equipment at the moment so was a bit concerned about getting an accurate mitre on the joining piece to ensure it sat square at 90, and then figured clamping it central while soldering would be a faff as well. After a bit of head scratching I decided to make the threaded part of the body first, from brass hex, so I drilled and then reamed a 1/4” hole through the middle with the center of the hole the right distance from the faced end of the hex. The hex was the turned to size and threaded, leaving a little extra meat to allow for the hole:
The upright part of the body was then turned as per the drawing but to be a tight push fit in the 1/4” hole, this meant silversoldering in the correct place was easy:

Axle pump done with its ram and banjos, was a little unsure how much movement the stainless balls were supposed to have, but shoved it in a cup of water and pumped the piston and it it moves water, so assume I guessed right!

Progress has slowed a little due to time and money constraints, still moving along though

Bit of progress with the boiler, firebox assembly is soldered up and barrel prepped to accept it, just need to find some time to start soldering them up! I got the plate work for the boiler laser cut to save some time, ie, smokebox tube plate, backhead and throat plate, have some spares if anyone’s interested, would be easily adaptable for other boilers of a similar size.

I have a silly question: what are the holes in the flue-tube? I speculate they increase heating surface by allowing water to flow through the flue itself? I've never seen this before.

Keith, I’m not going to pretend to be knowledgeable on the subject, I just followed the drawings! I would assume the idea is to increase the surface area available for heating water though!
