Eric build

Post by Garethh » Sat Nov 26, 2022 9:04 am

I’ve been slowly beavering away at the ‘steam trains in your garden’ Eric loco, just reached the stage of having a chassis that runs on air. It’s basically as described in the book with the exception of removable axle boxes with ball bearings fitted, pretty much as per dazzas epic build! Much use of laser cuts from model engineers laser was made to save some time.

It’s now time to decide how to fire her, I’m leaning towards coal or meths as it’s a bit more interesting, not a huge fan of the boiler design in the book though, does anyone reading this happen to have any drawings for a suitable boiler that’s known to work?

There is a design by Andrew Allison for a coal fired boiler intended to fit Brian Wilson's Jack design. It was published in Australian Model Engineering Issue 192. I think this is the design Dazza used as the basis for the boiler in his Eric.

AME is now defunct, but back issues of the magazine are available from Bolton Scale Models in Aust.

That issue also has an interesting article on a thermal analysis of the boiler design.

Thanks for the advice, if I can’t find something online then a back issue may be the answer!

email me
darrell@llewellynbikes.com
and I can send you scanned PDFs of the Andrew Allison articles .

I am yet to get back to testing my coal fired loco, I have been busy all year with the POR extension and driving at the Rattler every second weekend.
Soon, as I have some Welsh beans now.

Graeme,
Thanks for the link to issue #192 on the coal fired boiler for Brian Wilson's " Jack ". I may never convert my Jack to coal firing but wanted to see the article and what was involved.
