Perhaps try asking on G Scale Central?

I think you will find that the articulated drive is articulated by square sections that slide within one another..
If the trucks have been pivoted to excess, the drive between sections, can become uncoupled.

Though this might not be what you mean?

I notice there is a Phillips head screw in the middle of the flywheel on either side of the engine/cylinder arrangement. I presume this is what locks the flywheel to the crankshaft. Could yours be missing or perhaps what ever method positions it correctly (a square shaft or a flat!) has been sheared off on account of it slipping.
Just a thought, knowing nothing about how the drive works.
Grant.
