Roundhouse Gas Lamps

Post by RobRossington » Mon Sep 17, 2018 1:52 pm

Hello!

I've recently purchased two of these for my new platform at Top-End. They are lit using normal grain of wheat sized LEDs, which according to the Spiel are 12v.

Now, Can anybody advise what the best way of powering them is? Somebody suggested batteries, but I'd rather have them mains powered if possible, so they can be put on a timer, or switched on when we turn the external conservatory lights on.

The current plan is for them to be permanently planted in the concrete platform, and all the wires buried. I would like to make them removable though, has anybody done this? How did you do it if so?

Cheers in advance!

Rob

Rob, I don't know the Roundhouse product, so can't be specific, however if they are LED's and not old fashioned grain of wheat bulbs then presumably they have a resistor built in to allow them to run on 12vs since white LEd's normally operate at somewhere around 3v.

In my home made platform lamps I use a 3.0-3.6v LED running on a home made dusk-till-dawn solar powered setup. There are details on a thread I did in reply to a similar query a while back and it also answers how I make them removable.

Obviously they are not mains powered, but a simple 12v power supply unit would achieve that if you insist on the mains power, something like this:

Hope this might give you some ideas, at least

That’s a massive help. I might have a go at butchering a cheap set of solar panels powered fairy lights and see how I get on....
