Accucraft Wheelsets

Post by Big Jim » Mon Oct 16, 2017 9:33 pm

Can anyone tell me the dimensions of the axles that are used with Accucraft Wheelsets please. The length and the diameter please.

I am looking to re-wheel some bachmann big hauler wagons.

What ones are you looking at getting as I think they are different depending on wheel size.

I was thinking the 30mm diameter wheels.
But really what ever fits and allows me to regauge 8 bachmann bogie wagons that have landed in my lap so to speak.

Thanks Tom, I think they will be just the ticket, they will need a bit of shortening. Now to find someone who has 28 pairs of them in stock.

Twenty eight pairs of wheels, Fourteen axles, no wait...
Thirty two pairs of wheels, Fifteen axles.....

Hang on a minute...(Takes boots off to use toes to count to more than 15)....

Enough to re wheel eight bogie wagons, Sixteen Bogies, Thirty Two Axles, Sixty Four individual wheels.

Eyethankyooo.

It is 32 axles that I need for the great regauging project. Unfortunately, 30mm sm32 accucraft Wheelsets are currently on back order.

(great sounds of wailing and gnashing of teeth)

The Bachmann plastic trucks used under their 'Big Hauler' range are clones of LGB US style trucks. The plastic wheelsets are nothing to write home about, but the metal ones aren't too bad. Both types are easily gauge converted, which would let you run the models until the Accucraft factory get around to delivering more wheelsets.

The plastic wheels are moulded with sleeves which are a light push fit on the axles and can be easily removed. Just shorten each of the sleeves by 6mm and push the wheels back on the axle with 28mm back to back. Push the cut off sleeve pieces back on to the axles outside of the wheels and they will stop the wheelset slopping around in the bogie sideframes.

If you have metal wheelsets, they have the sleeves loosely fitted and separate to the wheels. The wheels have plastic bushes and can be easily removed from the axle, then shorten the sleeves and re-assemble everything.

Regards,
Graeme
