Castell Harlech scratch build

Post by -steves- » Thu Sep 17, 2015 7:09 am

I am having a go at building "something like" a Harlech Castle on an Accucraft chassis. I kind of have the body work together ....but.....

I am after ideas for the grill as most things I can seem to find are more like small chicken wire and the wire is very thin and is more of an odd shape. Any thoughts please? Note the grill is not square holes, they are rectangles, so as similar as this as possible please :)

The real one....

I will try and post some pictures up of the build so far, and yes I am fully aware that the windows are the wrong angle, lets call it a fettling error but  as I am not bothered about it as I actually think it looks better that way, I am leaving it that way  :lol[/img]

Now that is a brilliant idea, thank you, I was racking my brains for ages trying to think of something, and it didn't even cross my mind to look at anything like that, I was thinking garden stuff and it was all too big. Just have to find one with either click and collect or at Argos now as the postage is more than the item, lol

I really like this, a superb build.

For the radiator why not use length of M4 or M3 threaded rod side by side over the width of the opening.
This will look fairly much like radiator core / cooling fins.

Hi Mike.

Another great idea, but if possible I would like a grill effect rather than a radiator effect, but it is tempting to put some threaded rod behind the grill so at least it looks like a radiator behind it rather than 4 big round batteries as I will be using 4 x 3.7v li-lo (1650) type batteries to power it, giving me about 14.8v or around 16v fully charged.

Thank you.

I love this about forums, people have brilliant ideas that the likes of me would just never consider, so simple yet so effective :D

I have a garden sieve with three removable sieve discs with approx 2.5, 6 and 7mm sq mesh. I'm not 100% sure but I think it came from Aldi, although I have seen similar in other places.

My pleasure. Cheapest and easiest source of stainless steel mesh that I know of. Other supermarkets are available.

I like the car body repair mesh that you cover holes with before filling.

You just beat me to it Al... that is exactly what I would suggest too. It comes in nice flat sheets, can be cut with scissors and looks great on your model.

Car body repair mesh, nice and easy to work and can be stretched to shape. I have also used a course weave net curtain material as well.

In the end the car mesh repair stuff won out, it doesn't look too bad, in fact, much better than I thought it would, so thank you for your kind suggestions  :D

Just in the process of building a box for it now as all my others are in display / transport boxes, very easy to make, especially if you have access to a table saw. I will post up a thread about it at some point.  :D

As and when Roundhouse get in touch, hopefully I can get some little finishing bit sorted for it. ;)

Thanks Barry.

Got a couple of finishing touches done to it today, with thanks to Roundhouse providing name plates, lights and claxon. This is how it finally looks, everything glued on and painted up. Excuse the pun, but I am well chuffed with it.

Just a couple of wiring bits to do now but thats the outside all finished and I am very happy with my little project.
