O gauge clockwork track

Post by Clockwork » Thu Oct 11, 2018 10:29 am

Hi i just need some advice on the track i use with my clockwork locos and wagons. Is this track suitable to use in the garden as I'm planning to build a small raised layout to run my locos.

Hi Kevin,
You haven't said what track it is, so its difficult to be specific. However if it is tinplate ( Hornby etc) then I would expect it to rust easily and personally I wouldn't advise using it outside.

Hi Kevin,

If it's tinplate it will rust away fast outside. Even in a shed it will be at risk. I'm pretty sure I remember seeing something on the Hornby Collectors Forum about lightly oiling track that was to be kept in a shed. It's a while ago now and I've let my membership of the HRCA lapse which means I can't check.

Yes tinplate track will rust if left outside. Although not as quickly as you might think. Untreated you will have several years worth of use and tinplate track is very cheap to buy.
You could just use it and expect to replace every few years.

A coat of hammerite sprayed on will prolong things as will a good coating of oil.
If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer!
