Something we are always aiming to do is improve our products and here’s the next one!

Image

From today, we will be adding Vacumn Pipes to our Ffestiniog, Welsh Highland, Isle of Man and South African Railways ranges! With the exception of the FR Push Pull coaches, these will be included in the price of the kit with no additional price raises! The push pull coaches (110, 111, 112/113, 114, 117 and 121) will see a £5 price increase to cover the extra vacuum pipes needed per coach (4 compared to 2 for the rest of the affected kits).

Image

For those wondering, we are not adding them to Upnor Castle, Conway Castle or the Class 91 yet. All of these require custom vacuum pipes that we can’t cover with the casting we have procured. Jon is still working on them but we hope to have something to show by the end of the summer.

Image

Just off the workbench this evening

After having a rare afternoon off today, I've managed to work out how to convert the procured vacumn pipes into the styles needed for Conway Castle, Upnor Castle and the Class 91. These are all modifications off the standard pipes the required modifications of which we will add to the instructions should we decide to go ahead with it. Naturally, what do you guys think of them! Upnor Castle will stay the same price but the Class 91/Conway Castle will rise by £5 to allow for the extra required vacumn pipes. The changes are certainly easy to undertake but care will be needed to avoid damage during the conversion.

Having evaluated everything and looked at the sales performance of the the range in question, Bowaters Models is confirming as of the 5th of July, our South African Railways Rolling stock range will be being discontinued in the range as part of a streamlining towards other projects. As such, from today until Midnight on the 5th, we will be having a leaving sale for it of 20% off all SAR rolling stock kits. Please note, this does NOT include the Class 91 as we will be keeping it within the range and are very pleased with how it’s performing. If you visit our website, the discount will be applied automatically at checkout.

Please note as a result of this decision; the vacumn pipe upgrade for SAR stock has been cancelled.

Naturally if you have any questions, please let us know and Jon will be very happy to answer as best he can/is allowed too.

With the removal of the SAR range, time to move on and what a way to move on from. Coming soon from Bowaters Models will be a range of rolling stock covering the Burma Mines Railway in 16mm scale! Designed by Richard Williams, these stock are amongst the highest detailed models currently available from Bowaters Models and are definitely a sign of things to come! Suitable for both 32mm and 45mm gauges, these wagons are the perfect addition to your garden railway for those looking for something different! Each wagon scales out at a scale 25ft long each. For those wondering, there are at least 1-2 more kits to go with these in the works for a release at a later date including a 4 wheeled version of the Bogie Van!

Image

For those wondering, the minimum radius of these stock with the chopper couplings being used as supplied is 4ft. However, when you remove the springs from them, they will happily go around 38 inch radius curves.

Image

The prices for them are as follows - The Flat Wagon is £45, the Coke (Open) Wagon is £50, the Tank wagon is £55 and Bogie Van is £65. All prices are for MDF with Plywood being £15 more. Please note, the MDF Bogie Van kit does include some Plywood parts to better represent the prototype. They are not on the website left with a planned release of the end of the month of July

We're delighting to announce we've finally released the first phase of the Burma Mines Railway Range along with our 7/8ths Scale Bowaters Paper Railway redesign.

-Burma Mines Railway-

Designed by Richard Williams, these stock are amongst the highest detailed models currently available from Bowaters Models and are definitely a sign of things to come! Suitable for both 32mm and 45mm gauges, these wagons are the perfect addition to your garden railway for those looking for something different! Each wagon scales out at a scale 25ft long each. -7/8ths Scale Bowaters Paper Railway Rolling Stock Mark 2-

Image

Designed in house by Jon, this stock represents a massive improvement over the original with a significantly improved design along with the correct pattern Bogies for the wagons in question. Covering the same 4 wagon designs, these wagons are suitable for both 32mm and 45mm gauges. These have a minimum radius of 5ft using chopper couplings with a much smaller radius being suitable using 3 link couplings. While there is no suitable motive power kit available yet, we are working on upscaling our Hudson Hunslet Victor kit in 16mm to 7/8ths scale to match these wagons. Details on Victor will follow at a later date. Same with our 16mm versions, these wagons come with Accucraft Chopper Couplings which are the correct style for the prototype. We are looking at some dumb buffer versions as a future release.

The prices for them are as follows - The Flat wagon is £60 in MDF and £75 in Plywood. The Pulp Wagons are £65 in MDF and £80 in Plywood. All kits are available without bogies and couplings.

You can find both ranges on our website today!

Thanks Jon,
Just ordered my next pair of WHR shorties.
Nearly completed the first, for evaluation.
Still finding it a little on the long side for my line.
Thinking of carving the open down to a 4w version to run mid-set.

Not a problem at all! They've ended up in Batch M-0030 which is the one after the current one. The current one filled up rapidly on Monday! So I should be able to get them sent out tail end of next week.

With the final kits cut and the rest either packed or waiting on final parts to arrive, Bowaters Models is done for 2020! And what a year its been. We officially are closed from December 18th until the 8th of January 2021 (3 weeks). We won't be doing any cutting or sending out new orders however we will be answering enquires and emails as well as working on some new kits! What new kits I hear you ask? Well Jon has a small list to be getting on with which are as follows!

15mm Scale - MNR Foxdale Coach
16mm Scale - B&SRR Coach 15/16
16mm Scale - B&SRR Baggage Car 31 (Render of which is included below! Sadly without the etched details due to software limitations)
16mm Scale - SR&RL Pullman Car 9 Rangeley (Jon's biting the bullet and getting it done!)
16mm Scale - SR&RL Combine 11
16mm Scale - SR&RL Coach 17/18
16mm Scale - Statfold Barn Plymouth 7/8
7/8ths Scale - Bowaters Paper Railway Hudson Hunslet 'Victor'
1:32 scale - Additional Southern Railway and Pre Grouping Wagons plus brake vans

As well as all that, Jon's going to be starting detailed looking at additional Gauge 1 Coaches covering LB&SCR, LSWR and Southern Railway Prototypes! Which ones will be confirmed once the prototypes are built some time early next year.
We thank all our customers for their custom this year and we look forward to serving you next year!
However, Jon is also taking this opportunity to say a massive thank you to the members of Guildford Model Engineering Club's Garden Railway group for all the help, support, feedback and general encouragement given over this year. It is very safe to say, without their words of wisdom, the Gauge 1 range would not be what it is today (and will continue to grow into) as well as loaning the occasional steam engine for photographs and test running. A massive thank you to you all! In particular, a massive thank you Chris, Roger, Richard, Kim, Both Grahams, Adrian, Gerald, Alan, Bill, James, Matt and all the other members who's names Jon forgot while writing this who during the Zoom calls who gave valuable feedback as well as early constructive criticism during all the G1 development process to date.

New from Bowaters Models, 2 7/8ths Scale Engines and a range of freelance passenger coaches!

To start with the motive power....

Image

First up, is our Bowaters Paper Railway Hudson Hunslet 'Victor'. Available in plastic with either 32mm gauge or 45mm gauge chassis (you'll get the wider chassis by default but the wheels can be positioned for 32mm easily) with motor, wheels, 4w drive and bearings. You will also have the option of a Loco remote including one with sound recorded from the real engine! Price for the complete kit is £250.

Image

Next up, is our Royal Naval Armament Deport Hunslet 'Barton Hall'. Available in plastic with either 32mm gauge or 45mm gauge chassis (you'll get the wider chassis by default but the wheels can be positioned for 32mm easily) with motor, wheels, 4w drive and bearings. You will also have the option of a Loco remote and we are working on including one with sound recorded from the real engine once it re-enters traffic. Price for the complete kit is £250.

Moving onto 16mm.....

Image

Our range of 4 Freelance Corridor Coaches are based on our SAR coaches (which have returned if you haven't noticed after a lot of people requesting them). Covering the 1st class coaches with the V2 also converted, they're all available in MDF and Plywood with appropriate Bogies, Vacuum Pipes and Accucraft Chopper couplings. These models are effectively proto-lance.

Image

We've also at the request of a customer, created 2 freelance 4w coaches! Complete with beading, wheels, bearings and Accucraft Chopper couplings, these coaches are on the larger side for 4w coaches but we can happily scale these coaches to 2 compartment and 4 compartment with bogies. These are also available in MDF and Plywood.

That’s your lot. The final 2 internally designed 16mm kits for a period (to be reviewed in a year) although there are a couple of exceptions but they’re SKLR related kits.

Image

New from Bowaters Models, the Snailbeach hoppers! Available in Plywood only in either 32mm or 45mm gauges, they’re a combination of laser cutting and 3D printing. They will come complete with wheels/axles/bearings and you can choose to either have Accucraft Chopper couplings or supply your own. There are two chassis designs. Design A that is designed for under chassis mounted couplings (such as those fitted to FR slate wagons) and Design B designed for Accucraft Chopper Couplings. Both variants are priced at £40 each and there will be a discount of buy 5 and get the 6th free applied automatically at checkout!

Image

They are not going on the website yet (I want to get the backlog cleared before then because we’re still a couple of weeks behind) but we will be restricting numbers of these produced to keep production in check. We are at our limits when it comes to print capacity hence the more popular products are now being restricted (this is why it’s only 6 class 33s/91s (and 73s when released)). We will do 80 in the first month and then 40 a month after that. Please note these are the we are definitely doing that number. Any spare capacity will be dealt with in order number. Naturally, once we have a extra 3D printer (or 2 depending on space when we’re able to sort out some storage issues…..), then we can up the numbers accordingly or remove them completely depending on our average workload.
Estimated release date - 29th October 2020 alongside Rangeley and our mystery Gauge 1 coach!

The kits look great, Are there any plans to do freight rolling stock for Sierra Leone narrow gauge to go with all the 2-6-2t Hunslets out there? Or are the SAR kits close enough to use as "stand in's" for cars used on the SLR? I am hopefully that the SLR coaches come into production next year that I have heard about. Cheers Mike
