GRS 32mm gauge diesel and tippers

Post by Kubes » Mon Feb 19, 2018 12:40 pm

I've seen an advert for what looks like a very affordable little battery powered rtr diesel from GRS priced at £299 including four tipper trucks. Does anyone have any more info on this?

I saw that advert in latest 16mm NGM and it looks tempting.

I think it's a 'show only' special for Peterborough. :?

Has anyone had a go at modifying one of these yet? - Converting to RC, fitting a sound module or rechargeable battery for example. I'm going to do something with mine as it is just too slow (I like 'slow' but mine is very slow) - and for me shunting requires a radio.

I'd be grateful of any experience that can be handed down - there's not a lot of room inside the body.

If you search 'GRS motor' someone is doing a motor kit to make it faster although this model was only meant for shunting about the yard and not mainline running.

R/C wise, Deltang will fit well in the small space.

Hi all - thanks for the responses.

I am aware of the upgraded motor / gearbox kit on eBay. It also comes with upgraded lights (tbh I'm not that worried about the lights). I'll speak with RCTrains about options for controlling the 12V motor and sound.

I understand that it isn't a 'main line' engine, and I'm not even sure that the upgraded motor/box is a great deal better than as supplied. RC is my first priority and, as whist I'm in there, my thinking was to add the upgraded motor /gearbox and a sound card. It is actually a nice little loco - just a bit pedestrian and, for me, requires control for shunting.

I have seen one in the metal and it's a nice model but a bit small for my liking. You might be asking too much of it to fit R/C and sound in it with space for battery and speaker even if you use LiPo batteries.

The brass pole that pokes out of the cab for speed or direction control (can't remember what it does now) was a bit of an after thought...

having had a good look inside now I can see that things can be done. However, I've decided that the loco is probably best left as it is and use it for doing slow circuits with its own set of tipplers. The money that I would spend is best put towards an Accucraft Baguley or a Criccieth Castle (my preferred choice if I ever find on).

I have a Baguley on order for that reason as it has loads of space to convert.

...and actually a very close approximation at 16mm/ft. So, although he looks small, actually isn't. I notice that the exhaust stack on the real thing is much further forwards - but that's not an issue with mine as the thing fell off when I took it out of the box and it requires a pin putting in it to get it to stick back, which I haven't got around to yet.

Over the years replacement engines have been fitted, hence relocating the exhausts.

An oldish thread I know, but for info.

I have just picked one of these up too.

I believe that there is sufficient room to put some 3 small 18350 batteries in it (12.6v fully charged) and an RX65c Deltang receiver. I have thought about a sound card, but need to see what space will be left, quite a bit I hope once I rip the other bits out of it.

As per another post on here, it appears the guy that runs RC Trains has RC'd a few of these and I am hoping to hear from him about the best way to do it.
The buck stops here .......
