Thank you Andrew, I hadn't thought of tape but the obvious choice is always bottom of the list!!! I'll give it a try.

I have had a transfer sheet of stripes which is now exhausted. Had it for so long I have no idea where it came from. Possibly designed for 7mm/ft?

I'll look forward to your review in due course, but your initial thoughts are much appreciated, thanks. It sounds like just the thing for me in terms of both power and size - I'm after something that will look at home messing about with slate wagons etc whilst also able to handle a three coach passenger train if necessary - my Andel Moelwyn won't manage that.

Here's my old IP loco with Trimline wasp stripes:

You can see that it's tape if you look closely, but I was still pleased with the result. It's been a while since I did it but looking at the photo has reminded me how I was able to avoid any visible joins in the tape because of the position of the coupling...

Yeah, it should manage that easily!

I saw a video of one on youtube pulling 6 large bogie coaches with ease, it did look a little out of place, but three would be fine!

Like the IP Loco, that certainly looks the business! Looking back at my loco, it in fact seems that the main buffer beam is yellow with black tape or transfer stuck on top to form the wasp stripes, it works and you don't notice it unless you look closley, like on your loco.

I ordered Roundhouse number plates to come with the loco, so the still out of service Sheba has been allocated No.1, resident steamer Bertie No.2, and the new Little John (now nicknamed the 'electric lemon'

) is No.3.

I painted mine on yellow first then black and when dry cleaned up the edges come out OK.

If you want waterslide stripes, just spray a sheet of clear decal paper the required colour and cut it into strips when the paint is dry. That way you aren't limited in colour or stripe width to what is available commercially.

It is also possible to mark out the sheet and use masking tape to produce the pattern you want in a single piece. Either in a single colour with clear between the stripes, or with a second colour over a previously painted background colour. Difficult to apply on anything but a flat, smooth surface though........

Thanks for the tip Graeme, I might give it a try... Somehow I can't believe there is nothing available comercially as they seem to cater for most things and this is a commonly used effect.
I still think the sheet I had was probably made for the 7mm market so I'll ask my friends in that field whether they can offer advice too!

As you may have seen from the "Stanley's Back!" thread, the PFLR has ordered a new locomotive, an 0-4-0 steam tram coming in October/November 2014. This completes the railway directors plan for the locomotive power during the first few years - by the end of 2014 we will have two steam (No.4 un-named, No.2 Bertie), one general diesel (No.3 Little John) and one low power diesel (No.1 Sheba).

Update alert, update alert!

Resident steamer no. 2 Bertie has received a few small upgrades, to improve appearance. These are:

1. Brass polished dome. I have kept the old painted dome so I am able to swap them when I want to.
2. Brass chimney cap.
3. Dummy whistle. This obviously doesn't work but I have talked to Paul at DJB about a whistle for the Bertie, and he's going to have a look for me when he's up at Roundhouse. Unfortunately, he said there wouldn't be any space for it on the cab front but he might be able to fit one between the frames - we'll see.

The upgrades on the loco:

I think it improves it a lot, waiting for the brass dome to 'tarnish' a little as its brighter than the chimney cap and whistle, but it should turn out ok. :)

Looking good! I like a bit of brass my latest Lady Anne has the safety valve cover so a bit of extra work for the Brasso.

Two bits of news in one image:

The first, is that we now have a member of staff, rather than invisible people, ghosts or giant dogs... He's called Roger, and he's a driver.

Also, as you can see from the flat wagon, we are shortly to be initiating a signalling scheme. It will start with the basic signals - the first will be installed on the exit of the platform road at Poulton Farm, the second will be a home on the entrance to Poulton Farm and the third will either be a starter in the loop or a distant out on the approach to the farm. Exciting times!

How are you doing your signals? I presume with the CAD drawing you will be making a LASER cut carriage? If so what materials are you constructing with?

If I'm honest, they're sat here next to me in the box they were put in after that photo, I have the painting gear out now as I'm numbering up the wagons so I might continue painting it if I have time.

However I much I'd love to use CAD and laser software, thats actually a Trimble Sketchup 3D model of the coach. As its all in the correct sizes and all that I could theoretically 3D print it, but I don't think it would work

It's an extremely rough sketch however compared to my normal 3D modelling!

Whilst we're on the coach, it will use:
-Roundhouse Bogies (these have been knocking around in my Dad's stock for a while now)
-Plasticard for the frame
-Coffee stirrers for the planking and doors
-Cast items for the detailing

I'm hoping to start a dedicated thread once construction has commenced!

Dan,
You can download a free version of AutoCAD for home use (we use it at GET to make our engineering drawings). You can make dimension lines with dimensions and then print them out as a guide
I would recommend Swift Sixteen for bitz n bobs, as they do terrific quality stuff for quite reasonable prices. All of Robs stuff have a great level of detail aswell.
If you make more carriages I would also recommend using his bogies, as they are cheap, super detailed, durable AND are possibly the smoothest runners on the market!

Looking good Dan - watch out for warped and wonky coffee stirrers though...

I've just downloaded some CAD software myself, Draft Sight, looks fiendishly complicated but I've printed an instruction manual and await some nice quiet time to try to learn how to use it...

Anyway, kep us posted on the carriage...

As seen in the dedicated thread in the New Models board, here's PFLR No. 4, collected today from Roundhouse at the Warley show, along with one other (thats emigrating to Hungary) and two Berties.

Here she is, she will be steamed tomorrow, although I'm certainly looking forward to it!
