Small Cylinders for a scratchbuilt loco project?

Post by alan2525 » Tue Aug 19, 2008 1:14 pm

Can anyone suggest a supplier for small piston valve or small slide valve locomotive cylinders?

I'm playing around with the idea of scratchbuilding a loco. Trying to find a source for the cylinders. Something of comparable size to the cylinders fitted to the hemmens ogwen or the old accucraft ruby would be ideal.

Any ideas?

Could you use wilesco ones?

Someone fitted wilesco valve gear to a mamod loco.

That thing is a beast of a Mamod though! :P

I guess I can order cylinders as spare parts but it'd be nice to buy a pair as home builder parts so I can get some technical information about fitting them so can design the valve gear to suit. Roundhouse obviously sell their cylinders as homebuilder parts but really they are a little large for my liking, I was intending to build a smaller 2ft gauge loco.

It would be nice to find something that I could fit to a Mamod Size Loco, just with an eccentric valvegear and some dummy rodwork to just dress it up a little.

Thanks for that link! They do all the parts separately too.

Might work out pretty well with the price of the dollar at the moment too.

Can you buy the Wilesco cylinders as spare parts on their own? Can't find them listed online?

Another cheeky request would be...

...unlikely but does anyone have a spare double acting cylinder from a Wilesco, any condition, just to take a look at and get the dimensions for it?
