De Winton in 22.5mm scale - my first project.

Post by George Henry » Wed Oct 19, 2011 9:40 am

Unable to find a kit, I have redrawn Idris by a factor of 1.4 to give me a track width of 45mm.

Loco is approx 11 inches long. so is a decent size. Opting for straight sides as the boiler will then bolt directly to them. All brass chassis, all copper platework, ie watertank, bunker, etc. Boiler is 2.5 inch by 5 inch.

I have no lathework experience, so need to buy in machined parts.

This list is an excellent resource for you. I would also direct you to the 7/8ths Lounge where the 22.5mm scale chaps hang out. In fact, one chap is building an Idris in 22.5mm scale.

Paul. Thanks for reply - most grateful. I have found the article you refer to and it answers all the questions with a most comprehensive set of photographs.

Just wondering if this scale is popular in this country due to small response, or would I be better of building in SM32, please?

Well, I think it's fair to say 22.5mm is a bit of a niche market, but if you want to popularise the scale then the best thing to do is show people what can be done ;)

I will certainly be interested to see your models take shape; just because I only model in one scale doesn't mean I don't appreciate models in all scales!

I scaled one up for 45 mm track. It is a sucessful loco, and with its greater mass and volume it can run very slowly, slower than my 16 mm scale version.

Here it is in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FdQw78BLRc

Best wishes,
Dave.
