Jerry Irwin Kit build for FWLR
Re: Jerry Irwin Kit build for FWLR
Both sides done with the stretcher plates fitted.
Fitted,
With the wheels and brake assembly. You need to leave one side of the undercarriage unglued while you fit the wheels, if you don't you won't be able to fit them, so don't do it..
The next job was fitting the roof supports. This is an easy job, but you do need to put some tape on the two end and centre support. I tried the brown parcel tape Jerry uses, but I found it far too much hassle. I put sellotape on the support and the seat backs, then put the 4 cross beams in the slots, you can only put them in one way, because there is a slight difference in the positions of the cutouts on the beams. I also put some elastic bands around the coach to help to bring it tight to the supports, you need to do them this way if you want to put lights in and take the roof off if you need to change the batteries.
The first photo with the end and centre supports are painted because I was using them to get my paint mix right, they are snapped off when you have completed the assembly of the roof support. When the 4 cross beams are put in place you need to put some super glue in all of the corners of the supports and left them for about an hour to set properly after which you can snap the unwanted bits of the end and centre supports off.

Re: Jerry Irwin Kit build for FWLR
The next job is to fit the roof its self. This is another bit of an awkward job, luckily Jerry has thought about this and at the two end roof supports there are little scribed centre lines for which I forgot to tell you need to be facing outwards when you do the roof supports, because on the roof its self there is also two scribed lines on the inside of the roof to help aline the supports and the roof. You need to put one side on the roof, there are some slightly scribed lines to help with the bend of the roof, then holding the support firmly on the roof, roll it to about half way and put some super glue along the inside edge, this is where the fiddly awkward bit comes into play. Hold it there for about 5 minutes, then turn it around and do the same again. I did put it back into the coach and held it down with some more elastic bands so that it would hold the roof against the supports without leaving any gaps. I also before doing that ran some glue all along the inside of the roof and the supports, I did only put a little dab of the glue on, but you know what capillary action will do
By the way, in my previous post I said I had snapped off the unwanted bits of the end and centre supports, I did after I fitted the roof has you can see in the last photo here. Sorry
With the unwanted supports removed after leaving overnight to set. If you did this in the morning of course it you can carry on then if you want to.
With the lights fitted, this is an easy job if you have fitted lights before, you just need to be careful if you haven't because the glue that is on the strip is very strong and if you put too much pressure on while trying to get in-between the supports, you may find it's stuck.
The roof fitted and stained with a grey wash. I find this shows the grain up and because the grain on the bit of ply Jerry supplied looked nice I decided to keep it with the grain. Painting it would look ok, but boring...
More to follow later.

Looking good Rod!
The lighting's interesting - does it come with the kit? Sorry if I missed that earlier in the thread!

Re: Jerry Irwin Kit build for FWLR
Well I have now done some more on the coach. Sorry it's been some time since I last posted, but I hope you will be pleased with what I have done.
The roof needed some vents, so I got some from Jerry, only right that I should get them isn't it I painted them with Vallejo Gunmetal, all the paint I have used is Vallejo, there are other makers out there but I prefer Vallejo, either Model Color or Airbrush, they are both excellent paints and the model color goes a very long way when you use thinner medium. The vents are really well made and fitted without any issues, meaning none of those annoying bits of flash or stringing...
Then I thought something is missing.. It was the roundhead bolts for the chassis, so again I got some from Jerry, he very kindly sent me two sizes, 2.5mm and 2mm roundhead bolts and nuts. I only used the 2mm though, they seemed just right for me
So it's finished, or so I thought...I didn't do the underneath axle boxes or the brakes... It's was a bit, well a lot too fiddly to put them on for me. I have developed a little bit of shaky hands whenever I need to concentrate on placing very small items, (also my left hand thumb's arthritis has got worse. All this cold and wet weather we have been getting recently.)
So they were painted again with the Gunmetal paint, it seems to have done the job...
And the completed coach.
Conclusion, it's a kit that most will find easy enough and for those who are still a bit wary of building kits, this one of Jerry Irwin's is the easiest I have come across. If you are a bit daunted you needed worry, Jerry does do some videos on how to build his kits on YouTube and if you follow them you will find it a lot easier than just stumbling along thinking how and where does this go
I have tried in my own way, done this to show how easy they are, even if I have left some photos out, sorry. And I forgot to do some basic things and left out the bolts for the chassis and under carriage, but hopefully you will not. Also paint all your parts first, except for the last two items of the chassis, you don't need to paint the other parts of the chassis because you don't see them. The reason I paint mine is because the super glue no matter how careful you are won't let you paint over it that well, it happens with whatever you build. I only use a sewing pin when I super glue anything, but that still doesn't stop it seeping out slightly.
You will enjoy building Jerry's kits and hopefully you will be has proud as I am with mine. I am glad I bought this kit and you will too. The prices are excellent too by the way.

Re: Jerry Irwin Kit build for FWLR
Very well done Rod, you should feel proud of yourself. The additional detailing parts make it come alive and despite your shaky fingers they are all well placed.
The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?
Re: Jerry Irwin Kit build for FWLR
That looks excellent! A credit not only to Jerry's kit but also your careful construction techniques.

Re: Jerry Irwin Kit build for FWLR
Thank you guys, although it's taken me a lot longer than most I am pleased with the build.
And like I say Jerry's kits are of very good quality and his service is second to none. He went beyond most providers, also the quality of the wood he uses is also superb. It's well worth investing in one or two of his kits, you won't be disappointed.
I don't have any connection with this provider, just a very satisfied customer.

Great build. Very nice kit, lovely finish, brilliant explanation of the build.
Re: Jerry Irwin Kit build for FWLR
Very nice - such a smart livery!
I really like the little guard proudly showing off his new carriage too!

Re: Jerry Irwin Kit build for FWLR
Thanks Simon,
I tried to make it a bit easier for anyone who hasn't done any kit builds before and also maybe even the more experienced builder if they build any of Jerry's kits.

Thanks Andrew,
Anne choose the colours, I do think they work well.
The guard was bought some years ago, I did acquire the dog in November and it works I think with the guard...
