Exhibition Railway.

Post by Boustrophedon » Fri Sep 17, 2021 9:32 pm

The need for this is only a vague possibility at the moment and the event is a little way off. What we need is a G scale train to run around a continuous loop of track pulling an open wagon. Narrow gauge model is what we are looking for. To run all day.
Now I run live steam on 45mm unpowered track, this is not going to work.

So obviously it has to be electric and track powered; what's the most cost effective way of doing this without descending to Thomas the one who shall not be named toys?

The focus of the exhibition is plants and it's rather posh so it has to look classy rather than plasticky.

Presumably this is for a short term - 1 or 2 days?
My first thought is that you have a quiet word with somebody who already has the stock you need, and borrow it, unless you actually want to buy it for yourself to run in future.
OTOH, if you don'treally want/need to keep it, then why limit yourself to 45mm? 32mm would do just as well for demo purposes, by the sound of things?
Are you intending to leave it running unattended? If so you have the insurance to think about then, because you will have several hundred quids worth of train going round in circles!.
How long will it run each day? Battery loco's can have quite a long battery life, so you wouldn't necessarily be limited to track power.
