Backscene on fence

Post by Robert Hammond » Fri Dec 28, 2018 9:18 am

Two opposite sides of my layout are bordered by wooden fences. I have allowed access space for maintenance to the fences and the railway, but fences do not provide a realistic backdrop to create the illusion of distance. I got permission the very supportive neighbour who owns one of the fences, and took some time and experimenting to develop a method. The final solution was to completely cover my side with lightest grade of roofing felt with the grainy side outwards. Initially I attached it with staples, which was fine for the windward side, but on the leeward side I had to replace the staples with large head clouts. Where the felt covered a concrete post I attached it with Gripfill. Then I gave all the felt a coat of white masonry paint and then painted my backscene onto it, having previously painted a draft onto paper. I am not an artist by any means but the result is quite pleasing. Have a laugh at this section showing before and after.

Robert,

I certainly didn't see anything to laugh at. It's much better than the fence!
