Now written up the build process for the sawmill structure. I am working on the various bits of machinery for the interior - will provide more details on the fiddly bits later.

Please feel free, Rod. The rationale for my scribblings has always been to help others who may want to have a go themselves - or even just to say, "Well there's no way I would do it like that!". When I first started out in the garden, I read as much as I could about it and then muddled my own way through. I'm hoping that my blog may encourage a few to take that first step. After all, if a ham-fisted bodgeller like me can do it, anyone can.

I tested the building in its intended location (once it had stopped raining). Still needs to be properly bedded into its surroundings which need to be landscaped and then detailed, but it seems to look OK.

I could always have one of the signs with partially completed lettering and the signwriter up the ladder ....... No, actually, the poor signwriter would probably do the lettering on the ground and then have the sign hoisted up ..... actually that could be a possibility. I do like the idea of tableau scenes on a railway that tell a story - like Grant creates on his wonderful LNR.

I think either would be feasible. However I do have some limited experience of signwriters in real life and I certainly have seen them working off ladders. Plus, don't forget you are in an era well before 'elf 'n safety.

Must say that they are very talented people, used to watch one who did the sign writing on my Dads lorries

Actually, I've got a mate in the village who used to be a sign writer and come to think to it, I've seen him up a ladder outside a shop repainting and lettering its sign. So. either scenario is a possibility. Just need to check the 1911 census to see if there were any signwriters in the area - would be good to give him a name.

Latest update:

Slowly but surely (hopefully), I have been working on detailing the interior. Just about finished the saw carriage and its track, though need to install a representation of the pulley/funicular system for driving it. The log dogs were a bit of a fiddle. I did try fashioning them from metal but my skills aren't up to it. Once painted, plasticard should look fine.

Thanks to Philipy and Metalmuncher of this parish, I am now in possession of sufficient 3D printed pulleys of various sizes to complete the overhead lineshafts (once I've finished all the machinery). Here you can see another reason why I am a great fan of this forum and its community.

Between the three of us those pulleys are are looking pretty good Rik.
I like the carriage, log dogs, etc too, well done.
Looking forward to seeing this all finished, but possibly not till after India?
