Yes I do - I once worked in a team of 4 and 3 of us were Marks - we ended up just referring to each other using our surnames which did get odd looks when we had visitors!

During the final years of my schooling I was in a form along with another Peter Butler.... what are the chances of that?

This is defiantly coming on leaps and bounds. It must be the season of the railbus.

This is looking great, I think the bogie design is top notch.

It's certainly taking shape Jim. I love the motor bogie, a very workmanlike piece of construction. The whole thing is starting to appear now from the stack of components and we are starting to get a sense of its character.

Here is this week's update.... it's coming on faster than I expected.

RC and Sound kit will be ordered this week ready for fitting. I'm concentrating on the powered end of the multiple unit for now, the trailer car hasn't been touched this week.

Buffer beams and skirts going in:




Mahogany strips for the sides above and below the windows being carefully cut out around the doors:


Battery compartments and conduit tubes fitted:


Underfloor view of the cable conduits for power and lighitng:


The next images show bogie sides being made. I wasn't looking forward to making 8 of these so I made 1 and then made a silicone mould for resin casting of the set. The springs were hard but I came up with a method of winding solder around a silver steel bar. There can't be gaps in the spring or the mould wont work which rules out a normal spring:






Completed trailing bogie ( paint not quite dry in the pic)


Painting started, the sides will need 3/4 coats and rubbing down in between:

Thank you Tom....of course, you only see the pictures that I choose at the end of the day. I spare you guys the frustrated shouting / pile of broken / dropped / wrong parts in the bin and my wife bringing me coffee to calm me down .... When I set out building the railway, I had imagined that the most pleasure would come from sitting in the garden on a sunny evening watching the trains run around... I never thought that so much pleasure could come from making my own stock

I couldn't agree with you more James... the pleasure of seeing something you have made yourself and knowing the effort which has gone into it is far in advance of anything 'off the shelf' running round your garden.

Interesting that you chose to mould the bogie sides rather than 3D print them. Presumably you decided that trying to clean up 8 complicated surface prints to a decent standard would be too problematic?

Agree with your comment about the pleasures of building. I've found before that people are sometimes bemused by the fact that I can spend ages getting something built, run it once or twice and then do nothing more with it.

..... and of course, the added pleasure of knowing that the stock running gently round the garden on that sunny evening is quite unique to your railway and all your own work
