A commercial operation, even limited, isn't something I've seriously thought about. I wouldn't absolutely rule it out, but my wife thinks I'm spending far too much time on the drawing and printing as it is, and I still have a list of bits and pieces want for myself. These machines are not very quick, even a simple small chimney pot takes about 40 minutes each and unlike a normal 2D printer, you can't simply tell it to makes 10 or 100 of something and go away and leave it to do the job. You have to remove each object from the bed before starting another. Actually, for something small like chimney pots it would be fairly simple to multiply it on the drawing and print multiples as one job, but they would simply take x times as long as doing one, plus if something goes wrong during the print, you've lost the lot.

I see, it does seem like a lot of money though Phillip, unless you have a lot to make on it, which i presume you have with a garden layout and the cost of making it yourself against shop bought must be a lot less and of course you can customise it to be unique to you, purely one off that no body else will have, unless you do one for me lol

Yes, they are a lot of money, and my Qidi is very much at the cheap end of the spectrum ( a little under £600), but I've found it to be a pleasure in its own right, so almost the capital cost can be written off.
As for per item costs, if you look back at my 3D Printing thread, 2 posts from the bottom of the first page, I've given a very approximate guide. https://gardenrails.org/forum/viewtopic ... 25&t=11224 Suffice it to say I think it gives good value for money, so far.

it certainly does Phillip and like you say, it must be a great pleasure watching it, although not all the time lol , making a model you have thought about.

It may well be at the cheap end Phillip, but reading the reviews on it, it looks to be just has capable has the more expensive machines. Happy Modelling Phillip.

You can see the fire quire clearly and I guess with the lighting on much of the other detail will be viewable

Hi folks,
Sorry it's been a long time coming but finally the station is complete ( more or less!). In the middle of September I promised an update "shortly" (https://gardenrails.org/forum/viewtopic ... g&start=60), and actually, it's been sitting in the garage since the middle of October last year, but between the weather and holidays, it simply hasn't been possible to put it out. Today, at last we've had sun all day so I grabbed the chance.

So some of the components you'll have seen before in my 3D Printing threads, but some were never detailed and some were incomplete, so here it is:

First a view from the station throat end:

and then a similar view looking the other way:



A close-up of the fancy bargeboards and matching ridge tiles ( the ones on the main building are identical);



A close up of the station exit gate. The platform fence, railings and gate, lamppost, and buffer stop all printed.


The station building itself, with windows and doors, and bench, I've shown before, but here, the door notices, way out board, the rainwater goods, the fire buckets and mounting board and brackets, passenger and dog are all printed.


A close up of the gutter fittings,

The headshunt and platform end, again the cast iron notice is 3D printed. The buffer stop on the platform road is printed, the one on the short siding is from Peco.


A close up of a printed gas lamp - all printed apart from the plain tube of the post itself and the wire support brackets between the post and head..



The sharp eyed amongst you may have noticed that there is no ballast, however just as our intrepid photographer was about to pack up and go home, the PW Dept arrived with a trainload of ballast, so it shouldn't be too long!

Worth the wait Philip, that is a lovely piece of building. I can really see the attraction of the printing, the gutters look brilliant. I'm still wrestling with resin in a few grams to make 4mm scale tank ends...sometimes successfully and sometimes not

Philip - wow - great to see it all together - so many parts I know you've worked hard on perfecting- my fav bits are the guttering - both the rain catchers and the downpipes - really add depth and realism to the building

I know you don't want to set up a business printing this stuff but currently I don't see anyone else in 1:19 doing items like these

Super result and well worth the time and effort.... it certainly shows.

Loving this building looks fab

I love the overall atmosphere that you have created here, so much of it is down to the precise detail of your creations. I do normally think with a 6 or even a ten foot rule and what the eye cannot see etc. Here you have knocked that theory completely sideways.
Have you created the travel posters yourself by photo reduction or are they commercial items?

Splendid detail Philip, I'm still telling friends of your printed fireplace and that fire. Many things stand out, but I have to say the fencing, the exit gate look so real, I can hear the gate squeek a little as it's opened!
