Coach lighting

Post by ge_rik » Sun May 21, 2017 1:37 pm

Just finished adding coach lighting to show the interiors I finished off a couple of weeks ago.

Decided to operate the lighting with reed switches to avoid having to find somewhere discreet to hide the switches. https://riksrailway.blogspot.co.uk/2017 ... aches.html

Ironically Rik we posted videos about this on the same day!

I am going to use your reed switch idea as although I don't use a switch (piece of paper is slid on the postive contact of the button battery cell to turn lights off) I do have to remove the roof.

If you order 10 reed switches from China (for 99p inc postage!! - What?? ) then you should have plenty to spare. Those latching flip-flops (now there's an image :? ) are worth the investment as well. Beginning to think of other applications for them.

Does it matter whether the reed switch is a normally open or normally closed Rik?

Should be NO. The module is triggered when the trigger input is connected to ground (0v) so if you used NC it would be constantly triggering.

Hi Rik,

I got round to fitting this all up using just a hall sensor and 2 x 3v coin cell batteries and it worked, however, the batteries were dead the next day so I guess the hall sensor is using a fair bit of power.

Have you had to recharge your battery yet?

Nope. I ran the coaches again with lights on a couple of days ago when a visitor came to call and they still seemed to have plenty of charge. One of the reasons I rejected the hall effect sensors which I looked at was the relatively high residual current drain. I think the modules I used only draw 2uA whereas some of the other modules I looked at were as much as 60uA.
