LVLR broken ankle projects

Post by JMORG » Thu May 04, 2017 1:20 pm

Hi guys,
Thanks to my episode of trampolining, I've had plenty of time to repair, repaint and detail some of the stock whilst my ankle decides what date it'll want to work!
Thankfully, Peterborough allowed us to purchase A LOT of figures and a new station building, and the backlog of kits ect is getting smaller.
Finished items:
4 LVLR bogie wagons converted into 2 tarpaulin wagons, a cattle wagon and a closed wagon.
New station building for Rachel Halt.
Seated figures for stock.
Kerr, Stuart battery locomotive Tom Baldwin overhaul.

Items being done:
NWNGR Gladstone coach (new build, needs roof).
NWNGR Summer coach (new build, needs finishing touches, transfers, roof, passengers and bogies).
IP Cattle wagon (repainted from dove grey to GWR livery, finished).
VoR Swindon brake van (complete rebuild and repaint after fall damage, needs interior, running gear and roof).

Stuff to be (re)started
LVLR bogie wagon conversions (3 opens to finish).
IP MoD wagons (touch up after fall damage).
Swift Sixteen 4 wheel carriage (to be repainted).
Playmobil steam locomotive rebuild (why don't you work????)
Final IP panelled carriage for DFNGR rake.
Pictures to come later tonight.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, I always maintain that exercise is dangerous and should only ever be undertaken after careful consideration. Indeed if one is doing something healthy then you should ideally do something afterwards to counter the effect (at the same time if possible). A good example of this a long and vigorous walk to the pub, or stopping for chips after a trip to the gym.
A spell on the bench can be most useful when it comes to getting things done. I managed vast amounts while on the sick a few years ago. Every cloud has a silver lining as they say.
If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer!

Hi Jim,
Unfortunately I do like to keep active at all times. I attend the gym at least 5 times a week and I practice Taekwondo (surprisingly never injured)!
Unfortunately because my college is being awkward and not sending notes home, I'm getting impatient and bored. Thankfully I have some stuff to do in the meantime!

Sorry to hear of your injury, but as Jim said "every cloud has a silver lining" and your railway has certainly benefited. Lots of great building and painting work, you should have some quite long trains of stock with good variety.
Grant.

Great looking paint finishes to your stock. I've never thought of giving a loco a matt finish - it looks really good.

Hi.
Love the laser cut and 3d printed finishes you are getting. Gives us mere mortals something to aspire to.
I like your Gladstone car. This is my IP kit version. I would love to add curtains to the central section. Maybe give it a go.

Hi David,
Love the green car. We're currently purchasing ribbon to use as curtains. A removable roof is planned along with Swift Sixteen vac pipes and Brandbright choppers; we have a few in stock but I am told these will be brought back in the near future.
I'm planning on doing more to the summer carriage later today, hopefully a picture with the Single Fairlie will happen soon!

Hi.
I like a removeable roof. Seems so final to glue on. Allows for modifications and additions at any time. I did a blog on here somewhere on how i do mine. I'll look for it later and post a link unless someone beats me to it..
David.

New station and W/C buildings at Rachel Halt. The station signs and benches have all been repainted to the colours seen here, improvement I think.
All the other buildings will be repainted gradually.

Nice! :) The unified colours really set things off. I have your 'wc' as a platelayers hut. Did the station building come from Model Town as well?

The station is indeed Modeltown. Compared to the older Lineside delights buildings, these are very easy to build!

Certainly the case with the hut  It took more time to paint than assemble. I shall investigate that railway building. Thanks.

The finish is not as great as I wanted, it's one of IP's MDF carriages. It'll do for now though.
The summer carriage and Van 2 just need glazing to complete.

That's a good looking vehicle with great interior detail too. MDF would not be my choice of material.... has it reacted to the adhesive to make it uneven?

Thanks for that!
The curtains are made from satin sheet.
The MDF would not sand flat, painting caused a lot of fluffing up and uneven coverage. In the end I basically gave up and finished it as well as I could.

Once the hard outer surface of MDF has been compromised it is downhill from then on to get any smooth finish, whether you try paint or varnish.
It absorbs moisture and makes a 'fluffy' surface as you describe.
Perhaps our member, Jim @ NAL, has a magic solution to this problem?

Have you tried using sanding sealer? I've used it on mdf with pretty good results.
