Anglicised Stainz - nearly done

Post by ge_rik » Wed Mar 29, 2017 11:28 pm

Nearly finished Anglicising my LGB Starter Set Stainz loco. Still needs a bit more tweaking and titivation, but nearly there. Decided to give her a test run.

Hard to believe you got all that gear into such a small loco Rik, and you can still see through the cab. It's certainly looks good and is very capable with that load on the drawbar. The Stainz seems to have a very good reputation for being bullet proof, have thought about one myself on a few occasions. Good to see you back at it again.

That's a wicked camber on the curves, not to mention the gradient  Or is it the camera angle  Great to see you modelling again Rik.

No - it's shoddy camera work. Just plonked the camera down while the train was running its course. The train is a bit of a mish mash of stock as well - just what happened to be nearest the exit in the storage sidings.

Hi Grant
I designed the extensions to the side tanks so they would accommodate 18650 li-ions. I did consider putting the soundcard in the boiler in place of the LGB circuit board but then I wouldn't have had access to the trim pots controlling the volume and chuff tempo. It is sitting on the floor of the cab (sideways), so a higher angle shot would reveal it. I suppose I could remove the trim pots from the board and mount some elsewhere - just depends on how brave I'm feeling with the soldering iron.

A bit disappointed with the quality of the sound from the Dallee soundcard - but then I suppose it isn't the latest version. However, considering the cost when it was new you'd have thought they would have figured a way of increasing the tempo incrementally instead of in large 'steps'. Although the chuff is a bit synthy, it is somewhat better than the sandpaper rasp of the card which came with the loco.

You're right - the mechanism in the Stainz is very good quality and so she's a very smooth runner. Just trying to decide whether to keep or ditch the valve gear. In-frame valve gear would be more prototypical for a UK Loco.

Now more or less finished the titivating. I decided to remove the valve gear and she now looks more UKish. Mind you, from some angles she now has a passing resemblance to the Welshpool Beyer Peacocks - so maybe I should consider adding Walschaerts valve gear.....????!!

Well done Rik.

Sometimes I think I should go 45mm, more choice of locos!

Very nice Rik.

It could be the lovechild of a W&L and Snowdon Mountain pairing! No matter what, it's a lovely job.

Some lovely cameo scenes there Rik, it was a pleasure to watch and enjoy. It looks as though your garden is fighting back now everything is growing madly..... the railway is completely set into its own landscape... wonderful.

I love how with the Deltang you can run multiple locos all from one handset.

Where's the live steam in this video though Rik? ;)

Yes, took a good part of Saturday to 'tame' the garden - even so I missed some particularly agressive ivy which was growing across the track in the hidden section (between Beeston Market and the Copper Mine). Had to squirm under the baseboard to retrieve the loco it derailed.

Twill feature in the next video. Not got around to fitting the LGB couplings yet.
