PLR - A trip down the line

Post by ge_rik » Tue Aug 18, 2015 2:08 pm

I've seen a couple of videos of fellow modeller's railways recently where they show how the line fits into the wider setting of the garden. I found them fascinating. I wondered if you might like to see a similar sort of video of my railway. Here's a passenger train travelling from one terminus to the other -

<object width="640" height="480"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ERgZSlkUE5o?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ERgZSlkUE5o?ve ... n_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="480" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

A can run trains around the main circuit or out-and-back from either terminus - but prefer to run from end-to-end (weather permitting).

Superb Rik! Nicely thought out with plenty of travel options. It is quite a long run and fits in well with the garden layout and planting.
I am impressed with your control system too. Please let me (us) have details of components and suppliers.
I did PM but it seems to have got lost in the post!

Thoroughly enjoyed that video Rik. Your line is very attractive, with lots of scenic breaks and plenty of variation. :)

I cheat a bit by travelling over some sections more than once.

I use Deltang equipment. It's a bit cheaper than some of the rest but to my mind gives a lot of flexibility. Sometimes difficult keeping pace with the developments David T (Mr Deltang) makes - he's constantly innovating and improving his gear.

Here's an (old now) overview of the system which I made about 6 months after I started using it. http://riksrailway.blogspot.co.uk/2013/ ... ntrol.html

I'm still using the same transmitter and some of the locos have their original receiver/controllers but I'm gradually replacing the older rxs with his more recent offering which can handle up to 3amps and offers a load more built in features (such as auto station stop and auto shuttle - eg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drxH1UMhcmc

Marvelous, I can only add that the line is enormous fun to drive from end to end with all the locations, scenery and the bank to climb and gingerly brake down.

Thanks Zach. I think 'challenging' appropriately describes the ride for a live steam loco driver. I wondered whether sanders might be on your list of forthcoming projects?? :D ;)

I believe Tolhurst Model Engineers have already done that on their W&L Countess... (alongside working dampers and injectors). I think the real challenge would be finding 16mm scale sand...

I could sit in your garden and watch your line for hours Rik with a beer in hand ;) You really have cracked running R/C electric steam locos in this scale...

I saw this a while back on YouTube, if only we could get your engines to do this!

Thanks - a lovely compliment. Not sure it's fully justified, but you're welcome to come and sit watching trains any time.

That's amazing! I think it would take up too much room inside my little 0-4-0s, but would love to create something similar.

I just hope he's disabled the smoke detectors!

your line has a good length run. i like the fact it has not over taken the garden as well, it blends in well. it is true, its a sit down with beer and watch the trains go railway
