I don't think I've been so confused in my life

From what I can tell, it's a steam loco in the diesel body shell, and the noise is coming from a steam motor?

Brilliant, I doubt if many of this LBSC design were built back in the 1930's. Does it go backwards too?

It is a 1930's design by LBSC for an O gauge steam powered diesel outline loco. Perhaps diesels were starting to appear on the scene then. I scaled-up the design for 45 mm gauge, and increased the width a bit to match my LGB stock.

I've seen a picture of one other model made to the plans.

The loco has a large twin burner horizontal boiler up front. At the back in the cab there is a vertical single cylinder slide valve motor. It has a short stroke, and a larger bore. The motor drives the wheels by a worm gear. The steam is exhausted straight under the cab.

The flywheel is inaccessable, so there's a crank shaft extension front and rear which I plug the electric starter into. The motor has a slip eccentric and can run backwards too depending on which way the starter is going.

I am very pleased with the exhaust sound.

Best wishes,
Dave

They where built around the corner from our house, our house being built for the workers from Sentinel.

Stunning looking loco and the crankshaft answers that bit that had confused me
